Hezbollah working with Mexican drug cartels?
Has this news made it to the US yet?
In June, a U.S. congresswoman wrote to the Department of Homeland Security to warn that Hezbollah was increasing its presence in Central and South America.
In her letter, Congresswoman Sue Myrick called on the U.S. to work with Mexican forces, as there was intelligence that Hezbollah was working in conjunction with Mexican drug cartels on the U.S.-Mexico border. In 2009 a U.S. commander tasked with overseeing U.S. military interests in the region said Hezbollah was linked to drug-trafficking in Colombia.
"We have seen... an increase in a wide level of activity by the Iranian government in this region," Admiral James Stavridis told the Senate Armed Services Committee.
You all can see the implications of this, can't you?

Re: Hezbollah working with Mexican drug cartels?
A forward-looking, preemptive policy, by a competent administration would have the border towns on the Mexican side crawling with agents from the DEA and CIA in preparation for the necessary police action when the time comes. Juarez right now is the worlds most dangerous city with something over 2000 murders a year. If the Mexican government can't get control, it's up to the US to do what's necessary in the name of national security.
My guess is that when the Israel-Iran war starts, the US will get hit by terrorists on our home turf. Hezbollah is of course a surrogate that gives Iran the reach that its regular military forces lack. Rumor has it that the Israelis will strike before the Russian air defense system recently purchased by Iran is operational. I'm thinking the timetable is being discussed at this very moment between Obama and Netanyahu, much to the president's annoyance I might add.

Re: Hezbollah working with Mexican drug cartels?
Claire, Great post as always. The problem of illegal immigration is multifaceted, but the focus (by Democrats and MSM) is almost always on the wrong point, i.e., the otherwise law abiding poor Latino illegal, who just wants to do an honest days work. I have known some of these people, and many are wonderful folks, just as described. But, as your post correctly notes, this is more and more becoming an issue of escalating violent crime on the border, and national security.

Re: Hezbollah working with Mexican drug cartels?
That strikes me as poor strategy on Hezbollah's part. The more cartel violence increases on our border, the more attention the American public (and therefore our politicians) pay to it... and the harder it is for jidahists to cross undetected.
Then again, it makes sense if they're hoping to annex Mexico into the jihadist movement, setting up mosques there and sending bomb-strapped Mexicans our way. That's a scary thought.
Another possible long-term goal is to help the cartels establish a semi-independent narco-terrorist state along the Rio Grande. In the case of another World War (an inevitable consequence of globalization, though there's no telling when another will come), the OIC's allies would have a supply point and invasion foothold other than Cuba.

Re: Hezbollah working with Mexican drug cartels?
At the risk of sounding a bit off the wall, I think this scenario was actually a large part of the plot to a Tom Clancy novel. The drug cartels offered the terrorists easy access across the U.S. border and the terrorists offered the cartels access to an existing network in Europe to build their distribution networks there. Al Qaeda reputedly has a hand in the Afghan heroin trade, so the possibility that terrorists would work with narcos is hardly surprising, especially considering the cozy relationships between the Chavistas in South America and Iran. Hopefully, the U.S. military and intelligence community have been actively and quietly watching this for years.

I'm not shocked. They've been established in the Tri-Border Area of Paraguay/Argentina/Brazil for a while. I suspect they've been working northward with contacts with other bad actors like Chávez, FARC, and the Mexican cartels. Presumably they've got some guys in or heading for Phoenix and SoCal and other cartel bases in the U.S.
If it's true, it reminds me of the Bombintern of the ’70s, where the IRA was training in Libya alongside the PLO, ASALA, the Japanese Red Army, the M-19 of Colombia, &c…
