I'll be in New York next week, anyone feel like meeting me? Let's not do something boring like going out for a drink, though. Let's go to the Planetarium, or the Central Park Zoo. Or the Museum of Natural History--I love that.

Who's in?

YES, I'm in! I haven't been to any museums or such since I was a little kid. Would love to visit them again.

Actually, PJS, Emily and I have been trying to schedule a holiday Rico-soiree. Would you be up for something in the evening amongst friends as well as fun stuff during the day?

Claire Berlinski, Ed.

Not totally sure what the schedule is yet, but sure, in principle!

I think I've heard of it, but I 'm not quite sure. Where is "New York"?

Would love to meet you Claire but I'll be in Florida the 7th through the 12th for the American Youth Football and Cheer championships.

Very disappointed I won't get to spend time with Rico folks.

And I like the idea of Rico get-togethers not having to be at a bar (although I can't promise I won't bring a flask to other venues).

Perhaps the Indian Painting show at the Met?

And for those who can't imagine a Rico-soiree without cocktails and chat, the Met's late hours on Friday and Saturday evenings also feature bar and live music on the main balcony.

Actually, karaoke is A LOT of fun, and the best karaoke places I've been to outside of Japan are a few block from my office in midtown. Not as cultured as museums, planetariums or zoos, but still tons of family friendly fun.

Awesome!  I'll be within shouting distance of New York next week.  So around noon get real quiet and listen for me.

Ever have a dream about being in front of your 6th grade class with just your underwear on and feeling very self conscious?  Well I have karaoke dreams quite similar to that where the whole bar stops and laughs.  If that is A LOT of fun it has to be from the perspective of the audience as my alcohol fueled confidence that Johnny Cash might not sound so bad groaning from my ill trained vocal chords really did brighten some folks evenings at my expense last year.

Dr. J, Japanese style karaoke is in private rooms where only your friends can hear you belting out "Don't Stop Believin'" completely out of tune. You can even change the key of the background music to fit your vocal range!

Dang, Claire, NY's so far away.  Ever coming to Atlanta?

Humza, you cant make chicken salad out of chicken excrement but Im sure I would sound better as sounding worse is statistically impossible.

Have fun.  If I were there I'd vote Museum of Natural History.

If you ever get a chance to do Namaoke, do it.

It's karaoke with a live band instead of a karaoke machine.

They'll usually change the key, the tempo, and even the style of the song upon request.

Wanna belt out some AC/DC, but with a swing beat?  Not a problem.

Just for the record, I won't be participating in any meet-ups that DO NOT include a bar and/or the option of ordering fried food. Sometimes you just have to stand on principle.

I'm in NYC on business next week, but only Thursday evening will do. I have work commitments Wednesday evening and leave Friday afternoon. A lunch on Thursday or Friday might work, too.

That's kind of like visiting a zoo, isn't it?

Now you come to NY, when I'm within walking distance of the Arctic Circle.

Wow, Claire, you read my mind.  I have been wanting to suggest a NY get-together but have lacked the gumption.  In principle, I'm in.  I work in Manhattan Monday through Friday and might be able to participate in an event after working hours, whether it be museuming or post-museuming drinks.

I'm usually a boring cocktails-and-fried-food enthusiast (Troy and I are on the same wavelength), but as far as museums go...  As a geo-head, I like the American Museum (of Nat. Hist.), but I also have a soft spot for the Central Park Zoo, site of my first date with my wife.  (Awwwww.)  Keep in mind that if the group is large enough (e.g., at the Met, 10 or more), there are group discounts and benefits.

I don't want to speak out of turn, but it seems this might be an opportunity to secure a holiday gift for that special someone and have it inscribed by the author.
