James Lileks always looks utterly earnest--he is, after all, a Lutheran South Dakotan born and bred. But whenever he opens his mouth, he produces sheer hilarity.

Note to our crack editors: Can somebody find a photograph of James in the tank top he wore on the National Review cruise?

I've always been impressed with James ability to speak extemporaneously without ever have to resort to uh, er, or other placeholders.

As for the blindingly yellow garment, I said it before and I'll say it again, dagnabbit: I was headed for the run around the deck when I was waylaid to the Crow's Nest for trivia, which is where A) Rob took the picture, and B) Rob got the chance to do a taunting end-zone dance because we didn't take his advice on the second question. (Answer: Algeria.)
The rest of the cruise I wore a dun-colored burlap caul.

That is one of the things that astonished me about Ralph Reed on the NR cruise. He gave a 45-minute talk about the election results, replete with dozens of statistics, entirely without notes and without a single placeholder. By far the best presentation I've ever seen. The guy was born smooth.
