Tyrone Woods

Glen

Glen Doherty

Mollie Hemingway wondered if anything the Obama administration said about Benghazi was true. She ended her post with this quote from the CBS report.

"What's clear is that the public won't get a detailed account of what happened until after the election."

Well this is not detailed information, but it is a fact well worth knowing.

The two former SEALS,  Tyrone Woods, 41, and Glen Doherty, 42, were not employed by the State Department diplomatic security office and instead were what is known as personal service contractors who had other duties related to security, the officials said.

The two ex-Seals and others engaged in a lengthy firefight with the extremists who attacked the compound, a fight that stretched from the inner area of the consulate to an outside annex and a nearby safe house -- a location that the insurgents appeared to know about, the officials said.

And to it, add this account from the funeral of one of those heroes as reported on blackfive, by someone who is was a member of the SEAL community, and attended the final farewell.

I had the privilege of attending Ty Woods' funeral this morning at the North Island Naval Air Station Chapel in Coronado. Ty and Glen Doherty are former SEALs and State Department contractors who came to the aid of the US Ambassador to Libya during the attack on the Benghazi Consulate. Ty and Glen were not assigned to the Ambassador's security detail. However, when the attack against the Consulate came, they ran toward the sound of gunfire and and defended the facility and the Ambassador for several hours against a numerically superior assault force, and went out like rock stars after planting dozens of those scumbags.

Ty's widow, Dorothy, delivered an inspiring eulogy with more grace, poise, and fervor than I have ever witnessed from the spouse of a fallen warrior. I wish I had the entire thing on tape, as it should be read by the nation on the anniversary of 9/11 next year. Here are two quotes that I will never forget.

"It is easy to write a book about being a Navy SEAL, but it is very hard to write an obituary for one."

"To all the Operators here today I give you this charge: Rid the world of those savages.  I'll say it again, RID THE WORLD OF THOSE SAVAGES!"

TY for sharing your experience at the funeral. And for giving us an opportunity to praise these brave men who died fighting.  I am sad that we are being so little reliable information on how these Americans died, what this administration knew and when they knew it. The smell of another administration cover-up is very unpleasant.

Thanks. Been thinking about them and their families. Obama and Hilary have blood on their hands.

I certainly appreciate their bravery, but the more you learn about this story, the less sense it makes. What was the expected reward for Stevens doing something so risky? I don't think we know even 5% of the story yet.

By giving them a commander in chief who does not stab them in the back, respects their valor and loves this country.  Each of these criteria  excludes Barrack Obama.

They are America's best and what is great about America.  Whenever the topic is role models, pictures of these men and our other fearless warriors should be the definition of what it means to be a role model.

No. If we just build them a McDonalds and trade with them, then they'll be nice to us.  <sheesh!>

It sounds crass.  It is crass.  It needs doing anyway.

Run 30 second TV ads showing these two pictures.  Put a face on what is happening.  Explaining what Woods and Doherty did.  Then ask who was the Commander in Chief who apologized for them having to defend our ambassador.

Mitt needs to make it a point that he will NEVER apologize for America's freedoms...EVER.

I have stayed away from this topic since the first day or two, when, noting the absence of any discussion of the three persons killed with Ambassador Stevens, there had been no mention of Marine Security Guards.  I had found a posting on a milblog indicating those three were MSGs, which was obviously incorrect.

I am loathe to offer speculation, but now that these two names are out, I suppose it is more prudent to note what I have seen about their apparent mission.  These guys were there attempting to recover weapons (according to one of their own milblog postings).  Their main interest was in shoulder fired anti-aircraft weapons.  Other milblog postings indicate that the ambassador has a rather colorful past that may have recently included brokering the deals to distribute those weapons in Libya, under orders.

If true and if we now have an idea of whom is currently in possession of those weapons, we may be in a better position to understand the critical nature of the mission these "contractors" were assigned.  Those weapons in the hands of Al Qaeda would represent threats to thousands of lives.

If we want to win with a mandate, we need to do just this. We're right and there is no virtue in being shy about it.

For the record, here is a non-milblog link that apparently describes Woods' and Doherty's missions.  In this version, it was about hardware looted from Qaddafi's stores, but the same type of hardware.  Any hypothetical involvement by the ambassador is not relevant in that context.  However, from what I have skimmed from less open sources, there may be more to this story and what brought these folks to the same spot, on the same night.  I gather it may not have been to watch an inflammatory video.

Eric Holder's old law firm Covington and Burling probably represented the Al Qaeda killer. The irony is stunning . Thank God for men like this .

They deserve better , but never ask. RIP

CJ, are you hinting that this another version of Fast and Furious gone equally bad?

Not quite.  I believe he's saying that they were there to recover weapons spirited in for the use of Libyan rebels during the fight to oust Ghaddafi.  Things come back around to bite you in the butt.  Whoever decided to try to clean up the weapons had the right idea, but on the face of it sending in two lone (though highly professional) wolves to do it seems a little undercommitted.  If they had a half dozen of these guys on the spot, for whatever reason, it's likely the ambassador would be alive today.

Mel, do you think we will ever know? Look at fast and furious, I am not satisfied with the analysis which is supposed to be "unbaised". It does not make sense either.
