Hennessey Halloween

We woke up to this carcass of family pumpkin No. 2 on the street:
As you may remember, family pumpkin No. 1 fell victim to a squirrel. It's been a rough week for pumpkins and first graders in southwestern Connecticut.
However, at the town's Halloween parade, we saw smiles again:

Cui bono? I would submit that the 6YO girl had motive and opportunity. "Why couldn't they have eaten his pumpkin?"
Though I am pacing the room with hands clasped behind my back, this is hardly worthy of the full Poirot. Open and shut.

Oh who cares about the pumpkins when you know you're getting loads of candy tonight?

Had some of the irreligious little twerps round last night, Felicia. All Hallows Eve is on October 31st, dammit. Before All Saints Day. Though you'll get some evangelicals round these parts say it's wrong to have it on a Sunday.
Even had a young Gryffindor (crest on the cloak and everything) last night. Drew myself up, gave a sinister sneer, and said "Gryffindor, eh? I suppose you can have some anyway." Should've taken away five points for coming round on the wrong night.

Has SEIU been cleared of this charge yet?

Re: Hennessey Halloween
We live down a long, unlit driveway, and thus have very few trick-or-treaters. We do, however, get vandalized regularly. We have been egged, had our door spray-painted, and had TP thrown around (rather amateurishly I must say). Halloween lost its charm for us a long time ago.

Thanks for the laugh, Kennedy. I needed it.
Re: Hennessey Halloween
Oh, no, PJS! Don't tell me that. I had just begun to see its charm -- the crisp, colorful, crunchy leaves, the cool air, the smell of wood fires... but all these little disappointments lately have dashed our Halloween hopes. Then, to top it off, I took the 6-year-old out T or Ting before dark. Apparently, that's not done here. Well.

Re: Hennessey Halloween
I am pleased to report that the charm has been restored! Two batches of 4-5 year-olds and their parents braving the driveway. Buzz Lightyear, princesses, cowboys, a ladybug, and all of them saying "Thank you!" I think I will put my giant spider on my head for the next batch (if there is one).

I hare to admit it, but as child I would have been the pumpkin slayer.

Re: Hennessey Halloween
I know this is off the topic Ursula, but seeing the smiles on your beautiful children's faces can put our day-to-day problems truly in context. I recall your struggles with work, money and family health, and hope things are improving.
Re: Hennessey Halloween
What a lovely thing to say, David. That's exactly something my father would say. We still have some smallish struggles, but overall we are a very happy family. Even though I am not working, I chose that (with my husband's blessing). So the trade off of $ vs. time with kids is skewed a bit more toward the latter, but that's a good thing. The former will come (hopefully!) in time. Thanks again for being so thoughtful.

Ursula, I also was fortunate to be a stay-at-home mom, and I think it is the best thing I could have done for her (we wanted more, but it didn't work out). It goes by in a flash, even if the individual days sometimes drag. :)

Ursula,
You are a victim of Blue State Hooligans (even the squirrels). I say this becuase I had 3 pumpkins out for multiple nights in suburban Houston and despite being overrun with squirrels and punky teenagers, nothing was touched. Oh well now I get to throw them away.
Happy All Saints Day.

Re: Hennessey Halloween
Four smashed pumpkins on my street (it's only half a mile long). One tree with toilet paper in it. At least all the mailboxes are still standing. Usually many are demolished on "Mischief Night." I'll bring my leftover candy to the Election Night revels.

Re: Hennessey Halloween
In Australia we used to celebrate Guy Fawkes day (5th November) instead of Halloween. That was until the the officious government guys banned fireworks and the bonfires as being too dangerous. Ah, how I miss the smell of burning pitch on Catholic in the late spring air.

Ursula, I know you already know this, but your children are beautiful! Your whole world is in that picture and worth every moment you're away from your professional life. I feel your sadness for the pumpkins. Our dog ate one of ours, too, and I had to explain to three horrified children that shooting the dog was just a metaphor. Kind of. But, after that visual they forgave the dog.

Hmm, November 5 is on a Friday this year. Maybe I'll throw a party! Fireworks are still legal here in Soviet Canuckistan, and I have a bunch left over from Victoria Day.
Re: Hennessey Halloween
Ursula,
I'm with your husband: Halloween is overdone these days. Even the WSJ debunks the old razor-in-an-apple legend. I hate to admit it, but we didn't even carve a pumpkin this year. We have a plug-in jack-o-lantern.
cheers, bill
