Headlining at the Drudge Report at this very hour is news of ABC's "bombshell interview" with Newt's second wife, Marianne Gingrich, which allegedly sheds light on some game changing facts about the candidate.  The Drudge Report discloses that

marianne-gingrich

Marianne Gingrich has said she could end her ex-husband's career with a single interview.

Earlier this week, she sat before ABCNEWS cameras, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned...

She spoke to ABCNEWS reporter Brian Ross for two hours. Her explosive revelations are set to rock the campaign. But now a "civil war" has erupted inside of the network, an insider claims, on exactly when the confession will air!

ABCNEWS suits determined it would be "unethical" to run the Marianne Gingrich interview so close to the South Carolina Primary.

Two things I'm having a hard time working out here. First, how is it ethical to leak news of a "bombshell interview" and to claim that said interview could be a total game changer, but then not to release the interview so that voters can decide for themselves whether the information divulged therein was indeed important?  Second, is there really anything that a spurned ex-wife could say about Newt Gingrich—a man whose personal life we've all long known to be a [hopefully formerly] disheveled mess—that could potentially damn his chances in the upcoming South Carolina primary?

Update 7:06pm PT: AP reports that the interview will be aired Thursday, before the SC primary.

Update 4:35pm PT: According to The Drudge Report, "a decision was tentatively made to air the interview next Monday, after all votes have been counted."

I just talked to my source at ABC news who confirmed that the interview contains the following damning revelations;

  • Newt left his dirty socks on the floor
  • Newt repeatedly left the seat up on the toilet
  • Newt always put his toiletries on her side of the double vanity counter
  • Newt broke wind when they were in bed together

Oh wait...I'm confused...those are my wife's accusations about me.

Never mind!

Very good point and a sad one too.

Howie Kurtz says that the interview is nothing she hasn't said before but it's the first time such things have been said on video. That Esquire profile of her a few years back was brutal, and I guess if she says those things for the TV, it could hurt him.

Also, I am totally pulling for Gingrich to do well in South Carolina as part of my "To A Brokered Convention" pipe dream, but I do kind of enjoy the drama of him being hurt by his adulterous past.

If in fact there was one. Deciding when an interview is going to run is more commonly known as "programming."

Look, I'm no defender of ABC News. But I don't think Drudge, who has absolutely no journalistic standards at all, ought to get a free pass here.

Ooh, I have another thought. What if this does what the Bain attacks did to Romney? Meaning, what if this attack on Newt and Calista actually helps them and makes people sympathize with them? What amazing jujitsu that would be.

Well, remember why we know who Drudge is? Because he revealed that Newsweek (was it Newsweek?) was debating whether to run a story about Clinton's dalliance with an intern? This is the exact same m.o.

He doesn't view it as being blamed -- he views it as wanting the credit.

I've been mad at Drudge from time to time, but "journalistic standards" are what kept Lewinsky under wraps but puffed the Rathergate memo.  The modern media consumer has a responsibility to understand their chosen sources and evaluate content in that light.  Journalistic standards are, of necessity, increasingly a function of readership.

Am I bad? I keep hoping this keeps Santorum in the race past South Carolina. Okay, I'm bad.

But, Katie, no one would care if Santorum did have something like this happen. He's not a real contender -- he never was. He was strictly a flash in the pan due to all the conservatives who came out against Newt. I mean we all saw this speculation about who would be next and then the stupid Iowa caucus system responded.

Santorum's rise in Iowa is a perfect example of what a dedicated and highly motivated set of people can do electorally. But, it is a limited and short term burst into the body politic which quickly gets dissipated if the candidate isn't up to the challenge. Santorum just isn't up to it. He doesn't have the fire. (But, he's a good and decent and competent and smart man.)

Well, we shall.  Fire isn't the only thing wanted.  One wants a lack-of-disaster, for instance.  Steadiness of principle too.
