Headlining at the Drudge Report at this very hour is news of ABC's "bombshell interview" with Newt's second wife, Marianne Gingrich, which allegedly sheds light on some game changing facts about the candidate.  The Drudge Report discloses that

marianne-gingrich

Marianne Gingrich has said she could end her ex-husband's career with a single interview.

Earlier this week, she sat before ABCNEWS cameras, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned...

She spoke to ABCNEWS reporter Brian Ross for two hours. Her explosive revelations are set to rock the campaign. But now a "civil war" has erupted inside of the network, an insider claims, on exactly when the confession will air!

ABCNEWS suits determined it would be "unethical" to run the Marianne Gingrich interview so close to the South Carolina Primary.

Two things I'm having a hard time working out here. First, how is it ethical to leak news of a "bombshell interview" and to claim that said interview could be a total game changer, but then not to release the interview so that voters can decide for themselves whether the information divulged therein was indeed important?  Second, is there really anything that a spurned ex-wife could say about Newt Gingrich—a man whose personal life we've all long known to be a [hopefully formerly] disheveled mess—that could potentially damn his chances in the upcoming South Carolina primary?

Update 7:06pm PT: AP reports that the interview will be aired Thursday, before the SC primary.

Update 4:35pm PT: According to The Drudge Report, "a decision was tentatively made to air the interview next Monday, after all votes have been counted."

I bet whatever "bombshell" information She provides will only confirm that Gingrich is a politician.

This is a joke: a bitter ex-wife? No way!

As Steven Green (vodkapundit) said:

You want to get dirt from my exes, you're going to need a lot more camera crews.

I had no clue he was married to Stockard Channing.   Truth or just a bitter ex,  either way it will be damaging.

I find it strange that this is a bombshell, but Romney parking his cash in a Cayman Island account as a tax shelter didn't make a Drudge headline.

ABC is entitled to have any internal debate they want. If anyone's ethics are in question, it ought to be Drudge's. He's the one running the leaked story.

Oh, er..this won't last. ABC will have to put it out there, within 48 hours at most.

How much of this relates to Romney?  Certainly Iowa started quite a row between these two.

This was always going to come up if Newt continued. She has dished, and used that line, before - here's one from 2010.

I have a legit question: Why is Mitt Romney the least vetted candidate in the GOP?

To wit:

Tapper comes up with three strong arguments to launch at Romney, which to date none of his opponents have launched: That as governor he offered free cars to welfare recipients, that early releases for inmates serving life terms peaked under his governorship, and that RomneyCare offered free abortions. Tapper also tosses in an argument that Romney made it more expensive to own a gun in his state. Add that up plus Romney’s tax hike and RomneyCare and you have a very vulnerable record. But it hasn’t been attacked or exploited in time to stop his momentum or make a difference.

Without a doubt. It doesn't have to have anything to do with their marriage. Unless she was just along for the ride and didn't pay a lick of attention to his professional life, there's really very little a spouse might not be privy to. One hopes he makes an exception for classified national-security issues, but I'm pretty sure we've all noticed that, in general, Newt is constitutionally incapable of keeping his mouth shut. And that's in public. At home? In private? She could have heard anything.

That's a good enough question you should give it its own thread.

Yes, I saw that piece yesterday, and have been trying to figure out how to condense it into a Ricochet post. You want to give it a shot?

"Marianne Gingrich has said she could end her ex-husband's career with a single interview."

Bring it on!

I have zero patience with this sort of attention-whoring and threat-mongering.
Newsflash--we all know she doesn't like him. She is not threatening Newt but milions of Americans who want him to take down Obama!

Shame on Newt for not securing this overexposed flank, but I think a good number of people are going to find this less apocalyptic than she apparently hopes.  The only thing new here is the timing.

What I take from this is that the left wants Mitt Romney to be the nominee, and is starting to fear that Romney can't be dragged over the finish line without help.

So they leak this story to Drudge, complete with bountiful claims of its importance, figuring it will wreck Newt's chances of winning the SC primary.

But they won't air the actual interview until after the primary is over, depriving the voters of the chance to judge for themselves whether or not any charges in the interview have merit.

This reminds me of the George Bush DUI story that was uncorked the Friday before the election in 2000, and not in a good way.

I was going to argue until I saw "GOP" after the least vetted part.

Sounds like some clever hyping by ABC News to get the maximum exposure for this interview.  I doubt very much they're worried about the ethics running it so close to the SC primary.

It would violate ABC News standards to run it just before a primary vote. Much better to wait, in case Newt becomes the Republican nominee, and then they can run it just before the general election voting. It's a sin to waste good dirt on a primary.

"Please sit down. I have some bad news."

That's what ABC is doing. They know imaginations will run wild. They needn't reveal anything. Simply advertising "explosive" accusations will skew perceptions of Gingrich.

And, of course, this suspense and the drama surrounding it will attract more viewers.

Democrats probably fear Gingrich more than any other candidate. Unlike Republicans, they're realistic enough to realize that rhetoric is at least as influential as facts in an election.

Newt is in a battle with Rick S. for the social conservatives. MG (sheepishly): 'He scathed our boudoir in an unspeakable manner.' And he's toast.
