Helen Thomas in Playboy
An interview, not a photo spread. But a good excuse for all those men who tell their wives they get Playboy for the articles. Here's a link to some excerpts from her remarks, including one where she appears to be justifying suicide bombings:
"Of course I don't condone any violence against anyone. But who wouldn't fight for their country? What would any American do if their land was being taken? Remember Pearl Harbor. The Palestinian violence is to protect what little remains of Palestine. The suicide bombers act out of despair and desperation. Three generations of Palestinians have been forced out of their homes – by Israelis – and into refugee camps."

Re: Helen Thomas in Playboy
After your post of the Buckley/ Hefner interview the other day, this is a perfect coda for the Interviewer and Interviewee. I haven't checked to see whether they interviewed the estimable Mohammed al-Husseini ( aka Yasser Arafat) . You know....covering the bases for the oppressed, the UN, and Pacepa.
Now if they would all just go away after this one, things would improve. Sort of like Wilde's description of foxhunt.

Re: Helen Thomas in Playboy
Loathe though I am under normal circumstances to recommend books by Alan Dershowitz, his 2003 book The Case for Israel eviscerates the historical arguments of the hate-Israel crowd. I learned more about Israel from it than any other book.
Re: Helen Thomas in Playboy
Interesting topic.
At what point in any society is violence appropriate, and who should decide?
Re: Helen Thomas in Playboy
One other point - I wish I would have added this to the Ricochet list of arguments I'd like to win.
Can someone recommend to me (i see T.R.'s Dershowitz recommendation above) something I can read that gives a history of Palestine/Isreal from a governing perspective (who, when and how they came to power) from antiquity to the present?
I'd also be interested in works that include Biblical covenants, but I'd like to read them separately.
Note: I've tried Bernard Lewis, but he adds so much tedious detail that I can't see the forest through all the trees when I read his work.
Re: Helen Thomas in Playboy
Sorry. Can't get past the headline. Just can't.

Re: Helen Thomas in Playboy
Wow. No effort to rehabilitate her reputation there. Part of me always wondered if her comments were taken out of context. Clearly not. Is she promoting a book? Why does she feel the need to promote her views?

Try the Dershowitz. He structures the book as answers to typical statements made by haters of Israel. Each chapters takes a statement and debunks it. (e.g, Did European Jews displace Palestinians? Were Jews Unwilling the Share Palestine?). Considered together Dershowitz provides a pretty good analysis of the key historical/political issues since the late 19th century, when modern Zionism was born.
He doesn't address the older Biblical questions in any depth.

Geez Bill here I come back from lunch and almost lost it when I read your headline which, by the way, sounds like something "The Onion" would cook up.

This also take me down memory lane to recall one of the lamest excuses in history: "Honey. I do subscribe to Playboy, but only for the articles."

Re: Helen Thomas in Playboy
Trying to rationalize people like Helen Thomas is, invariably, a futile process. Suffice it to say: Ugly is as ugly does. And, Ms. Thomas certainly presses that envelope.

My stereotype of a Playboy subscriber would say: Who's Helen Thomas and why is she (it is she; right?) taking up space in my magazine?

Re: Helen Thomas in Playboy
Just playing devil's advocate here...I think she's one HOT anti semite.
If her name is anywhere on the front cover, Playboy's April issue is going to take a big hit.

Re: Helen Thomas in Playboy
Couldn't Helen T's argument in support of Palestinians and their quest for a homeland, be turned around and used as Israel's argument to sustain its own existence?
It's also interesting to note that the Palestinians have been kicked out of every Arab country they have migrated to. It would appear that Arabs aren't too crazy about having Palestinians in their countries. And yet, Israel protects Arabs living in Israel to the extent that Arabs share many, if not all the rights of Israeli citizens under Israeli law. Arabs even occupy elected positions in the Israeli Knesset. Can the Palestinians claim any similar comparison in their territory?

Playboy huh. Nice photos in playboy the pictures are intriguing, but sometimes heart-breaking. Read the playmate bio, I think it will challenge any reader's perspective.
Hey Tuscarora Jack, how do you get a 128x128 avatar? Flownover, Coolhand, Charles Mark, Pike Bishop, Etoiledunord and others have impressive headgear but they just have grande size avatars. You have a Venti, how does one get a bigger avatar? My photo adds more than my words.

Re: Helen Thomas in Playboy
Sad to say, Ms Thomas's views would be relatively uncontroversial in Ireland and the rest of Western Europe. The idea that she would be forced to resign from any job,or be stripped of any honours for expressing them is unthinkable. As it happens the present frontrunner in the Irish presidential election (Sen. David Norris) frequently makes Israel/Nazi and Gaza/Warsaw comparisons. And another leading candidate Michael D Higgins, under pressure from Michael Graham in a radio debate about rocket-attacks on Israeli civilians called Graham a w****r.No-one bats an eyelid! (PS The presidency is largely non-executive). Some evidence:
