Did you ever wonder how much of a fool you have to be in order to land a top administrative job at Harvard? Now you know: On Wednesday, Harvard University granted official recognition to a new S&M sex club. Each week, about 20 students participate, and they will now be eligible for university funding and use of Harvard property for promotional purposes.

I'm sure the irony of seeking administrative approval for a subversive sex club is entirely lost on the Harvard students involved.

Reportedly, students will explore things such as "fantasies of rape, forced feeding, and impersonating animals during sex..."

Let's see: Ivy League. Sadomasochism. Fantasy rape. Furry role play... Somebody should write a book if this kind of thing catches on and becomes a trend.

Can anyone think of a good title for a Sex & God at Yale Harvard knock-off? How about 50 Shades of Harvard?

And these guys are a tax exempt foundation.

My favorite reader idea so far is the Dog & Man at Harvard bit

Runner up: 50 Shades of Crimson

Also, thanks everyone for keeping this tread (relatively) clean. Have we made the editors nervous yet?

I wonder how long it will be before speaking out against this sort of thing will be considered "hate speech" and "sadomasochisaphobia."

One more example of the perverse effects of universities being insulated from the public by their huge endowments.

I am particularly intrigued by the notion of "Fantasies of Rape." Does that mean women who are fantasizing about being raped or men who fantasize about raping women. If two such people would meat and consent to play out their fantasy, it then wouldn't be rape.

I don't know though why people are very surprised  about all these things. The strange and deviant sexual desires have always been with us. Sadly though we have now become a society that is all about being honest and open. Some things it is better to be silent on or lie about.

Let me see if can shed a little light (though not too much) ...

Under PC rules of sexual engagement, the woman is in control of everything -- what, how, and where.  The "rape fantasy" for many women is how they describe "submitting" to their lover -- it becomes an encounter about his desires and wants, not their own.  It can also be a ego-booster to imagine oneself as so alluring that one's partner cannot control himself.

For a man, the reactionary role-reversal of him as in charge of the encounter is also quite satisfying -- it is often the only time his partner is focusing on his desires and allowing him to take charge.

And yes, it does suggest some rather horrible things about our society that play-acting a crime is the closest that some come to the divine order of a wife submitting to her husband.

That's exactly what I thought! I've never heard of this before. Thank God.

Governor Dudley is, no doubt, very proud today....

"The Charter of the President and Fellows of Harvard College,
under the seal of the Colony of Massachusetts Bay, and bearing the date May 31st, A. D. 1650

Whereas, through the good hand of God, many well devoted persons have been, and daily are moved, and stirred up, to give and bestow, sundry gifts, legacies, lands, and revenues for the advancement of all good literature, arts, and sciences in Harvard College, in Cambridge.... And that all the aforesaid transactions shall tend to, and for the use and behoof of the President, Fellows, scholars, and officers of the said College, and for all accommodations of buildings, books, and all other necessary provisions, and furnitures, as may be for the advancement and education of youth, in all manner of good literature, arts, and sciences....

In witness whereof, the Court hath caused the seal of the colony ... Dated the one and thirtieth day of the third month, called May, anno 1650.

THOMAS DUDLEY, Governor."

Who could have known known in 1650, AD  that S&M fell under "the advancement and education of youth, in all manner of good literature, arts, and sciences"? Ah, progress.

If I remember the more deranged writings of people like Shere Hite from the 1970's -- every sex act is a form of rape -- then this makes a great deal of sense: to the extent that Arkham Asylum makes sense on any given Tuesday.

For reasons of family-friendliness we should keep things at a PG-13 altitude.

I'll simply affirm that there is something about this PC rule which, as you've already noted, leaves something to be desired and doesn't reflect something we instinctively know about girls and boys and the bedroom.

They thought "S&M" was Leetspeak for "Same", perhaps, and that this was a gay rights group?
