Notice, Claire, no cats.

You can receive a blessing or nine lives, but not both, apparently.

Where is the Vicar of Dibley in all this?

The blessing of the animals reminds me of a song we sang once in church choir, whose lyrics, which I am not making up, go as follows:

O ye badgers and hedgehogs, bless the Lord,
O ye badgers and squirrels and hedgehogs, bless the Lord,
O ye badgers and squirrels and ferrets and foxes and hedgehogs, bless the Lord,
O ye parakeets and pelicans and porcupines and penguins,
guillemots and guinea pigs and gallinules and godwits
and badgers and hedgehogs, bless the Lord,
O ye weasels and warthogs and wallabies and wombats,
chipmunks and chuckwallas* and kookaburras and caterpillars
and badgers and hedgehogs, bless the Lord,
O ye dromedaries and ye dragonflies and diddy little daddy long legs,
budgerigars and bumblebees and bandicoots and bullfrogs
and badgers and hedgehogs, bless the Lord!

* The chuckwalla is a fairly slow-moving, thick-bodied lizard that defends itself by crawling into a crevice and gulping air to inflate its body, so that it cannot be dislodged until it deflates. A chuckwalla with no crevice to crawl into will sometimes inflate itself anyhow when startled. The old Latin name for the common chuckwalla is Sauromalus obesus, meaning fat, flat lizard.
