Peter dropped Judith and me a note this morning suggesting that we put up a few posts about Chanukah. He wanted to make sure that all of Ricochet's readers, Christian, Jewish, or Humza, felt included in the festive season.

I think that's a wonderful idea, so here we go: Happy Goyische Chanukah, my gentile Ricochet friends!

Don't forget: On Christmas day, we celebrate Jewish Christmas on Ricochet. I'll be holding down the fort, ordering Chinese take-out, and complaining that there's not much to do while you open the presents Santa brought you--all day long

Here in Israel, Hanuka is also known as "hag urim", or the festival of lights. It's a great holiday for kids, with chocolate and jelly donuts ("sufganiot") everywhere - but unfortunately for us adults, there is, rather inexplicably, no work holiday. I've never understood that, especially since the kids do have time off from school, making things extra crazy for parents.

By the way, that clip is awful... not in an offensive way, just, well... there's got to be something funnier out there! It's such perfect material for Jewish humor!

And for those who would like to explore the background, "In Our Time", the BBC radio programme which is the only thing they do that is anywhere near as good as Peter's "Uncommon Knowledge", did a discussion on Judas Maccabeus a few weeks ago:

You may have to do naughty things to get the download to work where you are.

Podcasts of "In Our Time" are available in iTunes.  The bbc link works.

Thanks Robert. I've really enjoyed Mr. Bragg's The Adventure of English (I've listened to the audiobook a couple of times)  and look forward to listening to more of him.

Funny stuff.

Isn't Passover the greater holy day for Jews?

To say the least. Chanukah, basically, is a minor holiday. I think it only really gained traction because Jewish kids were so attracted to all that Santa stuff, so their parents had to come up with something really appealing to compete--eight full days of presents.

Look, let's face it, for Jews the most important day is Yom Kippur. Our biggest holiday involves feeling incredibly guilty.

You feel guilty?  What about the goat?

I've alway been partial to this number written by Robert Smigel and sung by the great Darlene Love:
