Or, as Jim Treacher put it, happy 57th birthday, Mr. President! The Daily Show did a great job of explaining why we're not able to celebrate this momentous feast day better:

@TheDailyShow Happy Birthday @BarackObama! We didn't buy you a present because a lot of us are unemployed. Yours, America. #HappyBdayMrPresident

But the folks who shelled out the big bucks at a Chicago fundraiser last night are presumably doing all right. ($35,800 per plate!) And they got to hear some of the pithy campaign slogans President Obama is trying out for the campaign. Here's my favorite:

When I said 'change we can believe in' I didn't say 'change we can believe in tomorrow.'

Ha ha! You can read the whole speech and a rather brutal analysis of it over at the Los Angeles Times.

The President's comments were not very celebratory--"we've still got a lot of work to do"--and all that. He's telegraphing that he's in trouble, and he knows it.

I almost feel sorry for the guy. Barring some (undeserved) miracle, the next 15 months are gonna be a slog for him, culminating in a humiliation.

Here's another birthday tweet that I enjoyed:

@mitrebox Happy Birthday Mister President. The big 57.

So he's 50 today.  And he's from Hawaii.

Hawaii.

Five-0.

There's a joke in there somewhere…

The great humor columnist Dave Barry wrote a column a few years ago entitled "25 Things I Have Learned in 50 Years."  One of the 25 is the following:

"There comes a time when you should stop expecting other people to make a big deal about your birthday. That time is: age 11."

And then again at 21, and also 100.  But by the time you get to be a hundred years old you'll realize that most of the people your age tend to be dead, so it won't be much of a party.

We celebrate birthdays in my family, but I've often found it odd.  "Hurrah, I've lived for another year."

The price of admission to the big O'Birthday bash was exactly 10,000 times the monthly subscription price for Ricochet. Coincidence? I think not!

Life is always worth celebrating but it's the hypocritical Obama lavish lifestyle, while waging class warfare on the rich that just rubs me the wrong way.

I'd like to know how many who payed the $38k plus to attend voluntarily opt to pay more to the IRS every April 15 because they feel they "have enough" or haven't "paid their fair share".

My heart bleeds for him - not.

He brought this on himself, by pretending to be a centrist and hiding his Marxist beliefs.

It's hard to believe that anyone would pay $38K to be at his birthday - P.T Barnum comes to mind.

My first car was a 1971 Impala, 400 V8, 0-60mph in 1/4 a tank.  I still miss that car, even though it was a boat compared to the '61.

"When I said 'change we can believe in' I didn't say 'change we can believe in tomorrow.'"

This is as close to an admission of failure as I have ever heard by a sitting President.  Absolutely shocking.

From the article:
"Obama has ambitious but unspecified plans to reduce foreign oil imports and carbon emissions. And rebuild infrastructure. And he wants education reforms and better job training. We need to foster human rights in the world. And feed the globe's hungry. Revamp old buildings. And immigration laws. Reduce electric bills. Have U.S.-made wind turbines. Also electric cars. And cures for cancer and Alzheimers."

Reminds of what our own Richard Epstein once said when asked about the President:  "...he has very little by way of a skill set to understand the complex problems he wants to address, but he has this unbounded confidence in himself."
