U.S. presidential elections for a second term, as we all know, are job-status reports on the incumbent.

After seeing this, I think Romney and his team would have to be totally incompetent not to win -- and win with a decisive margin.

President Obama just threw a huge, slow, fat softball, and if Romney (who looked down to mention some names during his speech, but seemed impromptu in the rest of his rant) can bring that to the convention and the debates, you've got a winning argument. This is the beatdown moment.

I might have even felt a slight tingle on my leg.

Obama walked into an area where there is a very clear ideological difference between him and Romney -- and one that Romney takes personally.  Conservatives needn't fear his sincerity on this one -- nor, it seems, his ability to make his point effectively.

Romney needs to drive this one into the President like a Mack Truck:

"Where did the money for the road the government built come from? The taxes paid by the private sector.  There IS no government without the private sector, and the President never learned who serves who."

He needs to remind Obama what "We the people" means.

Well, alright.  But that clip was definitely a dopamine rush.

Pretty good. I give it a solid B+. At the end, he says a couple of things that occurred to me and probably a lot of other people: Obama's statement is not the sort of thing that would be said by anyone who runs a business, and it is not the sort of thing that should ever be said (or thought) by a U.S. president.

Great to see the fight. Great speech. But enough about Obama, what will Gov. Romney do that is different. I believe he has many great ideas, but enough about Obama, after a while it is a distraction.

I only give it a C. While Romney's energy and tone were great, his message essentially boiled down to: " I can't believe Obama actually said that. He is so inexperienced. I mean come on..... am I right or am I right?" That message and delivery is ok and it should definitely be part of the overall response, but I think it misses alot. The fact is that much of what Obama said is true in some sense; a thriving economy and populace depends on a society that values life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness and that pursues policies to support and encourage those values. Such a society isn't easy to build and it ain't free. True enough, but Obama goes on to twist this into exactly the wrong conclusions and policy pursuits; aside from astonished indignation Romney should also be able to point out exactly where Obama is going wrong. He didn't in this speech and I hope he does so before the opportunity passes him up.

It was a damned good speech. If Romney keeps it up, he is going to win a landslide.

But for the first time, I did understand the thrill of hearing the call of a positive future. Romney has LIVED the business owners lives for his entire career with private equity so he has this entrepreneural spirit and pro business DNA. FINALLY! EsoniaKat, thank you for making my day. Now can we get Romney working on his elite, banking image?

I forgot who it was, but someone on here once said that even if conservatism isn't Mitt Romney's first language, capitalism is. If this campaign is to be about capitalism itself, we could not have chosen a better candidate.

Aren't we forgetting the President's audience; unionized workers! His message was tailored for his audience, it was even delivered in an accent that I doubt he would have used at an ivy league commencement speech.  The firefighters were enthusiastic supporters whose jobs and retirement checks depend on the President's success.  Read his entire speech;  it was very good, although spoken by a demagogue!  Gov. Romney must speak to the future and till new ground; not simply celebrate his opponent's gaffes, as  that will not change anyone's vote; it just makes us feel good!
