Missed the first 15 minutes of the debate (family duties), dipped in for 15, as those who participated in our live chat will know, but then had to scoot (a certain fourteen-year old had to be driving to school for a basketball game).

Paul Rahe?  Troy Senik?  Bereket?  JamesOfEngland?  Somebody help me?

What'd I miss?

Update at 7:40PM Pacific: While I was typing this, Mollie put up a post of her own on the debate, immediately below.  I hereby (sheepishly) withdraw my plea for help, asking folks to post in Mollie's comment thread instead.  Will educate myself there.

What happened is this... Yesterday afternoon Mitt turned to an aide and said, "What do you think they'll ask me?" and for the first time he was actually prepared.

Newt was petty. Remember the Newt that said he was going to honor Reagan's 11th commandment? Gone. And not for the good.

Santorum shows two things: 1) They should not have ignored him in the early debates and 2) Troy Senik needs to sit in the front row with a red card. When Troy holds up the card, Rick stops.

Ron Paul is sound economically but is Charles Lindbergh and the America First crowd bat-guano crazy on foreign policy.

Oh, and Mitt's a big elephant and Newt's a mouse... whatever that means.

It was Pickett's Charge for us Newtsters, although with far less aplomb.

Pickett's Charge, meaning...that Newt got shot down in the end?  That it's over?

I think Mitt Romney won both Florida and the nomination tonight.  I am delighted.  I was very depressed as recently as Tuesday about the polls.  I don't understand what happened in SC.

Kudos to Rick Santorum as well,  If I didn't think he would hurt Mitt in the general with disgusted Democrats, I would be very happy to see him as a VP; I would love to see him in some high post in a Romney administration.  Wow.

PS:  Even Ron Paul was likable tonight.  If only more of his supporters were...

Santorum was embarrassing. Too much mention of God and faith when it was unnecessary. If it's important in your personal life that's fine. If asked about it that's fine too. Yeah, going over the top is red meat to some Repubs, but overall it makes moderates like me squirm a bit Big win for Romney, getting better but not perfect. Good practise for later.

So Mitt clinched the nomination?  Or are we still in for a long, enervating fight--only between Mitt and Rick, not Mitt and Newt?

Your graphics are works of genius, EJ.  Now I'd like to see a few of your predictions.

I'm s-o-o-o-o done doing predictions, but will note that pre-debate Romney was up on Gingrich on Intrade 75/25 re the FL primary. Post-debate it's 92/9 -- FWIW (which isn't much).

Mitt showed up tonight. I think it took South Carolina to do that. He was reading his own press clippings about the inevitability so his eye was on the general and not the primaries. But in this league you have to win your division to get to the postseason.

Once Romney realized he couldn't sleepwalk to the nomination he actually put effort into preparing for the argument. There's another month before the next debate. IF he shows up as prepared as he was tonight then he will win.

I think so, Peter.  Unless the next few month's campaigns should exhibit far different force-ratios than the North held over the South after Gettysburg.   The Shermanic march through the primary states does not look good for Georgia, I fear.

(No better than the Long March through the institutions looked once the Gramsci-ites took over the groves of academia)

I think Newt's status withered under the srutiny he received. Mitt was cruising until Santorum absolutely killed him on the lack of sucess of Romneycare and how that was a predicate of the future of Obamanacare. Paul has learned how to stay above the fray and seem charming in a superferlous way but that will not generate many votes. I suspect Romney will win the Folrida primary but Santorum may gain some ground and that will be a good thing.

I would also like to say that I don't know how to spell and it is almost impossible to post on an IPad.

SouthPess - Romney should be able to shine on an Obamacare answer - using his "lessons for America" from Romneycare. He will eventually get that answer though I think

There's always too much God and faith with Santorum, and this son of Levi, even though his intellect tells him better, in his heart sees Torquemada nodding with approval at Rick from beside the rack.  Rick would still crash in the general, should he reach it; but tonight he showed himself to be something much more politically admirable than a narrowly dogmatic Christian.  This much I'll admit.

As a Santorum fan, I would love it if that were true, and it might be. It might also be over.

Sadly, the only bit of this I know to be true is the EJ genius bit.

Tonight, the story was that Newt needed a knockout. If there was a knockout, it did involve Newt, but not the way he hoped. Maybe that's right, and Newt will lose Florida, come third (or fourth) in Nevada, get worn down by continual debate free defeats in February (until 1, Feb 22nd, before Michigan and Arizona), lose on Super Tuesday (other than the three southern states, AK if Palin swings it, and maybe Montana (one poll suggests this)).  At that point, I think Newt has to drop out. Maybe he stays for the final debate and an Illinois upset, but eventually he achieves dignity.

Peter,

Romney was strong on Israel but Newt trumped his ace.  Newt pledged to put the US Embassy in Jerusalem.  Newt has a big lead in my soul at this moment.

I just like Santorum and I just don't like Romney.  As I was saying on another Post, Rand needs to come and get Ron.  He wandered away from the home again.  Ron should realize that Rand having been at it for only a decade is a Senator.  Meanwhile, Ron babling away for 40 years is still a Congressman.  Gd is trying to tell Ron something.  Ron is just not listening.

After a little more thought, I think the one thing thing I can take away from this debate is that while watching the predebate show on CNN I thought who is Erin Burnette and how come I haven't ever seen her before? She is a very watchable young lady.

Yes, Newt is still by far the best on Israel, and that's one of the most unshakable reasons I'm sticking with him throughout the primaries.  Mittens is going to bag winner-take-all California anyway*, so  my cri de coeur will not hinder his progress.

* California Republicans, what few there are, are RINO to the max.
