Until the end of the day, Governor Haley Barbour of Mississippi will continue to focus his attentions on getting Republican governors elected across the country.

But tomorrow? Tomorrow, Ricochet's own Haley Barbour begins contemplating a 2012 presidential bid. POLITICO reports:

Barbour made clear...that a potential presidential run is on his mind, laying out how he’ll ultimately make the decision on running.

“I’m gonna sit down after [Tuesday] and see if there’s anything to think about,” he said. “But I don't feel any time pressure over the next few weeks or months. We’ll see if Marsha [his wife] thinks it’s a good idea and whether others think it’s a good idea.”

I love Haley. I identify with Haley, Heck, I even look and sound like Haley. Unfortunately, his chances of being elected president aren't that much better than mine. He is a member of the last class in America (southern, white, male, evangelical) that can be ridiculed with impunity. Can you even picture a debate between Governor Barbour and President Obama? SNL writers would wet their pants working on the material. A conversion to Islam would at least give him some protection and probably improve his chances.

Ricochet has been interviewing presidential candidates on the podcast for awhile now. Can we see the slate so far ! And the pool betting terms and minimum bets ?

Jeb Bush , Mitch Daniels, Barbour, Stassen, Fred Thompson , the list grows.

Haley can pull it off if he gets out in front of SNL and mocks himself first. Look what Fred Thompson has done on YouTube -- I think Haley can pull it out if he positions himself as the candidate who doesn't take himself too seriously, like the current Psychoanalyst in Chief.

Hope so, Pseudodionysius, hope so. Your citing Fred Thompson doesn't encourage me much though -- I was an early supporter of Fred, had to be to get a donation in before he flamed out. Did I really imply that SNL should have a say in picking our candidates? I'll send Haley some money the day he announces to make up for that error in judgement.

One question with Haley. How much dirt can they dig... Is he clean enough or has all the time in DC and as Gov in Miss left enough dirt on him he can't shake it... But I like the guy and whether at top of ticket or as VP he would be fun.

I'll drop this comment into this thread just because: I believe that Lisa Murkowski is pulling this 'write in' campaign in order not just to 'win', but also to ensure that Sarah Palin's pick (Joe Miller) loses. I think she has had a lot of Republican backing in this venture, too.

Fred Thompson is everyone's favorite bass fishing buddy. Haley is everyone's favorite fishing lodge owner. The difference? Executive experience.

Keep in mind that Haley Barbour is about as establishment Republican as you can get. He's very much a product of the current political class and that includes experience lobbying as well as running the Republican National Committee.

That said, he's apparently done well in his current role as governor and it's imperative that in 2012 Obama is replaced by someone who is competent and has actual executive experience.

I think a healthy degree of skepticism is in order when it comes to anyone who was associated with the Republican power structure when they sold out and went statist on us.

He starts pondering tomorrow? Alert the press! Good Lord, he never wears a hat anymore cause it's always in the ring.

When are we getting caps, incidentally? I wanna shower less frequently.

I am in the middle of listening to Robinson-Barbour interviews on Uncommon Knowledge. I heard a bit of Barbour this morning on Laura Ingraham's radio program. I was disappointed after experiencing Peter Robinson's suggestions that Barbour might be a great candidate for Prez in '12. I somehow recall that same, passionless, tone deliberately urging the value of compromise with the Democrats: it was the dismal rollover role of Dole all over. We understand that compromise can be an effective, limited tool. I am at a loss why Barbour would come out swinging with this as a high principle, and lecture a conservative audience on this--of all things--on the day a major win for conservatism coincident with, if not made possible by, the Tea Party movement. Mr. Barbour may have done great things for Republicans in the South, but he has a tin ear for the future directions and needs of conservatism. Passion, vision and reason work together!

Hi David! Isn't Peter Robinson great with those interviews? I've become very fond of his work both here with Ricochet and with Uncommon Knowledge.

I think you and I are on the same page. It is critical that whoever follows Obama have the ability to understand and embrace big ideas like beginning to restore America to it's rightful place as a constitutional republic. It's equally important that whoever follows him have the ability to execute. We're going to want someone with significant executive ability to begin the process of constitutional restoration.

Haley Barbour may very well have a positive track record as an executive up to and including his recent work as a real live state governor. However, his background is clearly one of an establishment Republican during the time when the Republicans embraced anti-constitutional statism.

I lived long enough not to trust what politicians tell you and to focus on their past actions. That's one of the reasons why it's important to study and learn from history. History tells me that we need to be very skeptical of the idea that a Barbour presidency would be a good idea.

Publius, indeed, Peter Robinson's interviews are very interesting. I have never owned a TV, so I am late in discovering his productions. They fill a void. I long wondered why conservatives since Buckley could not match Public TV- and radio-quality programming. The style I loved, but was dismayed with NPR and PBS lefty bias. I became acquainted with Peter in Menlo Park when I lived, worked and worshipped there. I am extremely grateful that he has put Ricochet together. Purely by accident, while looking for a Reagan biography, I came across How Ronald Reagan Changed My Life. It was the right message for me at the right time; I have given away and loaned copies to friends. Regarding the Republicans, yes, this is not just a throw-the-bums-out, reflexive response. I know it must not have been from you either. This is an analysis built up after many years now of supporting Republicans and getting (collectively) kicked in the teeth. Well, these guys are talented, sure, but there is an awful lot of other conservative talent out there--and a lot of fresh ideas. I hope Ricochet eventually enables members to initiate conversations and organize.

My biggest complaint with Ricochet right now is the clunky interface. It's very difficult to keep track of conversations and to know when someone as responded to something that I wrote so that I can actively engage people in conversation.

I love the team that they have assembled and the vibe from the site is great, but there needs to be some serious interface redesign before people are going to embrace this wonderful concept in a large scale and profitable manner, I think.
