winter

In Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania earlier today, the world's most famous groundhog, "Punxsutawney Phil," emerged from his lair to find himself startled by his own shadow, indicating that winter will last another six weeks--and reminding yours truly of one of the funniest, and most profound, movies ever made.

Above, the official proclamation of the Groundhog Club of Punxsutawney.  And below,  thirty-seven seconds of "Groundhog Day," the movie in which Bill Murray finds himself condemned to repeating the same day over and over again until he finally gets it right.  (And, yes, if you're wondering, I'm feeling an almost physical aversion to politics today. I keep trying to write about the GOP primary--and keep finding myself retreating to business and pop culture.  For now at least, I've just plain had enough.)

Anyway, happy Groundhog Day--and does anybody else like the movie as much as I do?

I jumped online to see if I could track down Jonah Goldberg's seven-year-old column about the movie Groundhog Day, and I see he's reposted it . . . today!

Go. Read.

Excerpt:

Charles Murray, author of Human Accomplishment, has cited Groundhog Day more than once as one of the few cultural achievements of recent times that will be remembered centuries from now. He was quoted in The New Yorker declaring, “It is a brilliant moral fable offering an Aristotelian view of the world.”

I know what you’re thinking: We’re talking about the movie in which Bill Murray tells a big rat sitting on his lap, “Don’t drive angry,” right? Yep, that’s the one. You might like to know that the rodent in question is actually Jesus — at least that’s what film historian Michael Bronski told the Times. “The groundhog is clearly the resurrected Christ, the ever-hopeful renewal of life at springtime, at a time of pagan-Christian holidays. And when I say that the groundhog is Jesus, I say that with great respect.”

Doesn't have the same impact in sunny California as it did when I was a kid back east.  In my childish fantasy, I actually thought that there was something to it.

:-)

BTW, love the movie.  A real classic.

6 "more" weeks of winter?  It was 64 degrees in New Jersey this week.

Yes, Peter, an excellent movie, despite the presence of Bill Murray (I've come to conclude I'm the only red-blooded American male who actually loathes Bill Murray).

It also looks like Jonah has beaten Shannen into submission.  A few years their quarrel was epic; now nary a peep.

I hope it's true.  The 70+ temps here in TX are perfect.  It'd be a shame to spoil it with spring.

It is one of the funniest movies ever.  I love Stephen Tobolowsky as Ned Ryerson.

"'Needlenose Ned'? 'Ned the Head'? C'mon, buddy. Case Western High. Ned Ryerson: I did the whistling belly-button trick at the high school talent show? Bing! Ned Ryerson: got the shingles real bad senior year, almost didn't graduate? Bing, again. Ned Ryerson: I dated your sister Mary Pat a couple times until you told me not to anymore?"

That's ok... I don't mind waiting a couple of seconds.  I've been waiting seven years for my wife to get one of my jokes.

So did you turn pro with that whole belly-button thing?

I resemble Bill Murray in Groundhog Day in one respect.  I seem to be having the same problem with "The Most Important Relationship in My Life".

There is one difference.  Since I have become Religious, about the last 15 years, more often then not, it was the woman who didn't get it right not me.  That may seem like an arrogant claim.  However, what has occured in Society over the last 40 years is that women are now in roles that used to be just for men.  Funny thing, in life, when you do something new, you don't just get the rewards, you get the new reponsibilities along with it too.

I am sorry to report to you that Women under 40 years of age in this country are just as stupid and shallow as men were 40 years ago.  Their values are pathetically corrupted by the Society surrounding them.  More often then not the PC quota based affirmative action mentality is not employed to protect them from prejudice but is employed as an active scam.  They hide behind this nonsense to gain power and money.

They are unconcerned about whether they will even have a child period!
