Here's some fun stuff about the new imam of the Ground Zero mosque.

... [Abdallah] Adhami, 44, said being gay was a 'painful trial' which comes as a result of past trauma.

He said: 'An enormously overwhelming percentage of people struggle with homosexual feeling because of some form of violent emotional or sexual abuse at some point in their life. A small, tiny percentage of people are born with a natural inclination that they cannot explain. You find this in the animal kingdom at some level as well.'

Adhami also apparently said that people who leave Islam should go to jail!

Now that's the way to run an interfaith community center, isn't it?

Greg Gutfeld, call your office!

Good to know the Ground Zero Mosque has taken a compassionate stand on the gay penguin issue.

It's a big improvement over killing them, but he stll has a ways to go.

No, no -- this is moderation. It's now up to us to meet him halfway.

Won't the Liberals Love This!

By the same logic, should we expect social conservatives to start rallying around the GZM to show their solidarity with its stance on traditional values?

Well, not everyone agrees on what traditional values are. Not all social conservatives believe the same things. For example, I'm a social conservative, but I do not agree with what the imam said. Liberals, as a whole, decried anyone who gave off so much as a whiff of worry about the GZM as hypocritical neanderthals.

Ursula,

My apologies for being a little snarky earlier, but I'm having trouble seeing this as anything other than a "gotcha!"

Unless I'm missing something, your point was that Liberals who supported the GZM and called its opponents Islamophobic neanderthals are going to have a lot of explaining to do now that the mosque's new imam has admitted to some very un-liberal ideas about homosexuality. But, again -- to be logically consistent -- shouldn't that also require all social conservatives who share these views to also reexamine their attitudes toward the mosque?

Frankly, both of these strike me as rather silly.

Really? Are there really lots of American social conservatives calling for gays to be hanged, and atheists to be jailed?

Not sure I follow. "Gotcha"? It's the same kind of stuff that was going on with the previous imam's financial trail. Much worthwhile man (and woman) power was spent trying to figure out where this guy was getting his support. Now, a new guy. Silly to take note of his info/philosophies? Really?

Also, "all social conservatives who share these views" ... What group is this? A group of social conservatives who think gays are "that way" because of sexual abuse? Who compare groups of humans to the animal kingdom? Who think people who are not religious should be jailed? Do they have a group name? And is the group publicly against the GZM? I'm not particularly aware of it. This is not to say people don't hold these views. Of course, some people do, unfortunately. Whether they were out in front of the "I'm a little concerned about the GZM" movement is suspect.

Well, some of us don't agree with that at all.

We're calling for gays to be jailed and atheists to be hanged.

No, there aren't any. I should have been clearer before, but I was focusing on the imam's attitudes about homosexuality, not atheists/apostates/etc. However, the article Ursula linked did not quote the imam calling for homosexuals to be executed or jailed.

Tom, first off, I should have 1) welcomed you to Ricochet! So glad you are here. I see you are new(ish). Hope you don't mind a little back and forth.

And, 2) I probably shouldn't have used the word "liberal" in the headline. Should have chosen something a bit better.

1) My pleasure. I've been following the podcasts for months and felt oblidged to fork over my monthly $3.47; that I get to participate is a bonus. And I love back-and-forth, especially with fellow conservatives.

2) Fair enough. Pax.
