Farewell to the great comic actor Kenneth Mars. He created many memorable roles over his 40 plus year career, but his portrayal of Inspector Kemp in Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein is indelible.

Ruhe in Frieden, Franz Liebkind. Mars played the lunatic author of Springtime for Hitler: A Gay Romp With Adolf & Eva At Berchtesgaden, and created such a concoction of pathetic tenement-dwelling pigeon breeder, impotently malevolent Nazi, slobbering sentimentalist, Churchill hater, and boyishly, insanely optimistic playwright desperate for approval, he actually made the idea of Springtime for Hitler seem conceivable and kicked The Producers into yet another gear. My vote for the funniest character bit in what might be the funniest movie ever made.

Hmm. Well, it won’t embed. Here’s the scene. Click through. You won’t regret it.

Many times the Fuehrer said to me, "Franz -- ow." (who'd have guessed that Mel Brooks would outlive so many of his actors?)

Can't disagree, Bill. It was a tough call between that scene and Young Frankenstein. He's also great as the vaguely European geologist in What's Up Doc?

And tonight jazz titan George Shearing has also passed away at age 91.

His accents were always soooooo over the top...intentionally, of course.

We seem to be losing our character actors at much faster than replacement rates.

Shearing's " September in the Rain" and Kennneth Mars cheating at darts are two things that have improved life for me.

Respects from me as well. He was a Central Casting category all by himself.

I was just going to say that Mr. Mars took Charlie Chaplin's insight that a great way to fight Hitler would be to mock him mercilessly all the way to 11 in "The Producers," but you beat me to it, and did a much better job than I would have, too.

Requiescat in pace, Mr. Mars.

Otto was great.

I always enjoyed him as the progressively injured Sheriff Wooly Bill Hitchcock in the Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again.
