Queenslanders voted in state elections on Saturday. The Left has been wiped out... the destruction is almost complete.. It was the largest swing in Australian electoral history. From being the majority government Labor is left with 8 seats in the 89 seat parliament.

Over to you Americans.. do the same in November. Go ahead.. I dare you.

I just started using Hulu the other day and I came across an Australian show called AIR Force.  It was very informative. It spelled out the choice the RAAF was trying to make a few years ago. It sounded as if the financial piece was a something the voters had a real choice on.  Based on your news above. Can I assume RAAF purchased the latest in Air Power?

As you see from the news over here, the left is already preparing the battle space by fanning racial divisions. Blacks comprise only 13% of the population. Throw in the brain-dead left and you get to only 20%. This requires a heavy reliance on fake outrage to move the slumbering independent vote onto the Democratic side.

Antipodius, how did it happen? I've read that the national government has been heavily into the climate insanity, so I guess this result is in part backlash from that, but what else? I gather that the Australian states still hold more relative power than ours.

Where does a Yank go to read a good backgrounder on contemporary Aussie politics?

Question:  How long before Gillard must call a national election?

This is great news. I never know what to think of Aussie politics. Having been a close follower of Australian surfing for over forty years now, I have an overwhelmingly counter-culture view of public political sentiment there. I think all of the heroes of my youth there developed their skills while unashamedly on the dole.

Prime Minister Howard was a welcome surprise and Tim Blair is always bracing, but those two and the handful on Ricochet are the only conservatives I know of down there. Apparently there are a few more.

I'll be down to celebrate with you as soon as I get my boards packed and convince the wife. You have a little place right there at Snapper Rocks, right?

Edit: A vague memory of a former post sent me to your profile and I see you're in Melbourne. So the meet-up will be at Bells.

I've been following this story and learned a few things this weekend.

I'll copy this relevant section of the Wikipedia entry on Australian Politics

"

Within Australian political culture, the Coalition is considered centre-right and the Labor Party is considered centre-left. Australian conservatism is largely represented by the Coalition, along with Australian liberalism, which refers to free-market economic neoliberalism, rather than centre-left social liberalism as in the United States and United Kingdom. The Labor Party categorises itself as social democratic, although it has pursued a neoliberal economic policy since the prime ministership of Bob Hawke.

Queensland in particular, along with Western Australia and the Northern Territory, are regarded as comparatively conservative. Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, and the Australian Capital Territory are regarded as comparatively socially liberal.New South Wales has often been regarded as a politically moderate bellweather state."

Excellent!

And for all who are curious as I was, the image in the post is of Campbell Newman, who emerged out of the weekend's elections as the new premier of Queensland, and his wife Lisa.

Excellent news. It is about time people all around the world wise up to the dangers of the Left, although down under they did a pretty good job at shooting themselves in the foot by pushing through a carbon tax they promised it will not be introduced. Interesting times ahead.

Great news.  Is this part of a broader trend in Australia, or is it a return to normalcy for the more conservative provinces?

It always struck me as odd that the Ozzies would elect lefties, given their natural conservatism - but then I used to think the same about the USA.

From what I've read or heard from Mr Steyn and Mr Delingpole, this victory is indeed down to Green issues (or Watermelons), where the current lefties promised not to introduce a carbon tax, and then did (with lefties, you have to vote before finding out what they will do - although it's usually predictable if you ignore what they say).

I look forward to Mr Delingpole's podcast from Oz, where he will no doubt explain this is greater detail. If he's still thinking of emigrating from the UK, Oz is looking a better bet than the US, currently.

Barfly- For Australia best political conservative blog go to Andrew Bolt blog

Federal Labor will be next. Annihilation. Lies and duplicity don't get pols too far down under and the parallels between the Australian left and the American left with Obama coming when this lot got in 07 is astounding.

From no debt to a running sore deficit in 5 short years let alone all the state debt. Too too much. They are gone gone gone.

Here is the fmr Lib/coaition treasurer Costello on ABC ( left) lateline of the GFC with ref to the American banking scene.

If we had him as PM we would be laughing but he wouldn't challenge PM Howard as he didn't have the numbers. They lost to Labor and we are in a real economic mess. The Carbon tax is the killer.
