The headlines today are so disturbing that I'd like to just stop reading them. The news from the Koreas is terrifying. The photos from Cambodia are unbearable. I've noticed about fifty awful stories that aren't even breaking page A32 in most newspapers, but should.

I don't think it's particularly useful for me to sit here contemplating all of this in horror, so for the next few hours, I'm going to put my mind elsewhere. Help me out. Post good news I might be missing. I'll start: Here's a report of dramatic new advances in the treatment of multiple sclerosis. How magnificent is that?

Not one negative word in this comment thread from anyone, please. We've got plenty of space elsewhere for that.

Good news only.

OK, so how about making this a permanent recurring rubric on Ricochet?

And name it in honor of Claire the Founder?

Would give us a pretext to start inventing a funny name for the rubric...

Shall I start with the delicious

"Claire's Eclairs"  ? (how do I get an acute accent in this window?)

Or is this too silly?

I had Dry Needling of trigger points in my upper trapezius, lower trapezius, supraspinatus, rhomboids and gluteus minimus and gluteus maximus. I survived the experience.

Amazing coincidence, because I've been recommending trigger point therapy to a friend here with chronic shoulder pain. I trust -- since this is the good news thread -- that you were helped by it, which is great.

I was helped by it, but the underlying cause of my rotator cuff problems was diagnosed as my left hip instability, after my wonderfully talented *female* physio therapist (you have to really trust your opposite sex health care practitioner when she proposes to stick needles in your rear end I might add) performed a Functional Movement Screen developed by the legendary Gray Cook.

And when his new book Movement gets endorsements from Peyton Manning and Jon Torine of the Indianapolis Colts, I pay very close attention.

And your friend should be looking at Indian Clubs. I trust you and Bill Walsh could have a field day looking at the history of Indian Clubs and how they fell out of use and have now returned as an adjunctive therapeutic device.

And Claire, for trigger points, you should look at the wonderful Rumble Roller, the ultimate foam roller for trigger point treatment.

Though Mars rover Spirit has fallen silent, rover Opportunity continues to explore Mars.

The rovers were designed to operate for 90 days.  Both have exceeded 6 years of operation.

I salute the human spirit of adventure and ingenuity.

My apologies Claire, how could I forget about the Turkish Get Up? Small language warning at the end (hey, its 40 kg people, give her a break!)

Yes, and Machida beat Rampage (though unfortunately, the judges didn't see it that way. To his credit, Rampage admitted his defeat.)

I hate 3 round fights and wish that they were all 5. And, if I may say so, I am still a submission snob. Nothing beats a well executed submission hold. Its a thing of technical beauty.

There is no question that that particular fight was unfinished and needed more rounds. Submissions are great, but so are knockouts. The great thing about MMA is the chess match aspect of it -- not the brutality. The multiplicity of skills and the matching up of different styles. Way more fascinating than one would think and far less barbaric, imo. See how positive we're staying on this thread.

Morally, I have the same concerns that Augustine did about Romans who went to the Coliseum. Perhaps its my inner Calvinist speaking (at war with my inner Catholic which is at war with my inner pagan) but I do have concerns about long term head trauma to the fighters. I still agree that if you want to cut down on head trauma just get rid of the gloves and try to let them pop each other with bare hands (hello reconstructive hand surgery) but I agree with you its the chess like tactics that always made me a boxing fan and now an MMA fan.

Agreed on all counts, but I've been impressed w/ judges stopping fights as soon as possible (not always of course).

I visited my Nana and Papa this weekend in New Hampshire.

Nana turned 90 on Saturday.

Papa is 93. They celebrated their 68th Wedding Anniversary last week.

I went to two 90th birthday parties for my grandmothers this year.

Peter Robinson

As Michael Tee demonstrates above, a lot of the good news in the world is local--often intensely local. In this spirit, my little entry:
