Good News In A Sea Of Bad
A couple of tiny bright spots I’m enjoying right now are the recent labor developments in Michigan and the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals taking down the last state banning outright ownership of handguns, Illinois.
There are also pockets of conservatism and orthodoxy moving through my beloved Catholic Church.
Cardinal Roger Mahony was replaced by the Opus Dei formed Jose Gomez as Archbishop here in Los Angeles, and perhaps the best example of a new direction is with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Many called the USCCB just another arm of the Democratic Party for putting life issues aside as they promoted a liberal agenda in the name of “social justice.” With Cardinal Timothy Dolan as the new president, that direction is at least stalled.
And don’t get me started on Benedict The XVI. He’s a pillar.
Hugh Hewitt asked a group of attorneys at a recent Thomas More Society meeting if we would rather have a Romney victory, or the Dolan / Ratzinger combo. For me, when you throw in Bishop Gomez, I’ll take the combo -- or at least I will be consoled by their presence.

Yes, Ignatius, but just think: Dolan in New York, Chaput in Philadelphia--you and I might have wished the appointments had been the other way around, but still--and Gomez in Los Angeles.
A papal hat trick that deserves three cheers.

I brought up the US bishops' request to pray, fast, abstain from meat on Fridays, and set aside a holy hour once a month for the cause of life, marriage, and religious freedom with a nice bunch of church ladies recently and got a near fist-shaking fit from one of them over the conservatives taking us backward! The next thing you know, they'll be reverting to the Latin Mass!!
I'm very comforted to have such conservatism and orthodoxy expressed by the Catholic leadership in what I suspect will be exceedingly trying times for the Church. But, not everyone feels that way, and the disunity is disturbing my peace of mind. The spirit of Vatican II passions run so high, I'm not sure we can even dialog. "Smaller and more convicted" will not come without suffering.

Chaput appeared on the Hugh Hewitt show for a long interview earlier this week. Chaput said something to the effect that Catholic clerics in his generation put "social justice" (whatever that is) on a pedestal, but that this movement leftwards is stalling.
Most self-identifying Catholics voted for Obama whereas most mass-attending Catholics voted for Romney, so you can't blame the parish priests for that. Still, Catholics are muddle to me - I can't wrap my head around them - so I can't figure out where they fit in the political calculus.

I'm a huge admire of Archbishop Chaput. I read his weekly column. I would highly recommend his book Render Unto Caesar to any Catholic or conservative. He's thoughtful thinker and shephard of the Church. Also, Peter's UK interview with Archbishop Chaput is excellent.
