Breaking from the Associated Press:

Newt Gingrich's campaign manager and numerous other key aides have resigned together, a strong blow to his hopes for the Republican presidential nomination.

One Twitter reaction:

How ironic that Newt's campaign staff decided to leave his campaign while it was on its death bed.

What do you think? What effect will this have on his run?

He was running? Who knew?

Other than Calista, who was asking him to run?

Paul A. Rahe

No effect. His campaign was not going to go anywhere anyway.

It is amazing how one can become so enamored with one's own voice.

Newt is a lot easier to take serious when he's not asking for any actual power.

Weren't some of them associated with Rick Perry?

Maybe they realized that it's a fool's errand anyway.

I don't see irony in abandoning a sinking ship.

Hard not to see it in light of this WSJ article on Perry:

Should he run, Mr. Perry would first have to overcome an organizational hurdle. Assured that he wasn't running, his two top campaign aides, Mr. Carney and former campaign manager Rob Johnson, both signed up with Mr. Gingrich, the former House speaker

I don't think this will have any effect on Newt's campaign. In fact, this should allow him to share his thoughts now, completely unrestrained by anything resembling an edit function.

Bring on the Newtpocalypse!  And let's see what Governor Perry has to offer.

She wasn't on her death bed. She's still alive. She was recovering from the removal of a benign tumor, and the divorce was already in the works. And according to her daughter, she was in favor of the divorce. That's what her daughter (also Newt's daughter) wrote in a recent column about it. That doesn't mean that the first wife never held a grudge. She was happy to take Newt down a peg when called by reporters. That's what ex-wives are for.

Key strategist Dave Carney also resigned, telling NBC: "The professional team came to the realization that the direction of the campaign they sought and Newt's vision for the campaign were incompatible."

Who would have guessed that Newt's campaign team was seeking a direction other than "corkscrewing into the ground"?

His campaign was DOA to start with, now it's just a bit more stiff.

And no, that wasn't a Weiner joke.

If there's a struggle about where Newt wants to go, one wonders whether

  • Newt hired the staffers ... or ...
  • the staffers thought they had hired Newt.

He divorced his ill wife awhile back. Some folks referred to it as leaving her on her "death bed."

Ha!  Couldn't happen to a nicer waffling populist windbag.  Oh; wait!  I'm having Déjà vu of McCain all of a sudden.

I like him, too.  And I think having Newt in any discussion lends to the depth and seriousness of it.  However, I'm also a big fan of clarity and I think Newt just got some.

Does Callista Gingrich not know what office Newt is seeking?

Fred Barnes at the Weekly Standard:

The last straw for the campaign staff was Gingrich’s decision to go on a two-week cruise in the Mediterranean, from which he returned on Tuesday. His advisers urged him not to go and take so much time from a campaign that was already in trouble. But his wife wanted him to go and she won the argument.

As a result, the morale of the Gingrich staff fell sharply. And fundraising declined as well with Gingrich absent from the day-to-day media coverage of the campaign.

While Gingrich was away, his aides talked among themselves about the course of the campaign. They wanted him to commit to seeking the Republican nomination on a full-time basis, including time spent in personal fundraising by Gingrich himself. Gingrich balked at this. His wife wanted him to pursue the presidency at a less strenuous clip.
