Likely Republican voters nationwide are still divided on who they want to be their nominee and the latest Rasmussen poll shows Newt Gingrich with 27% of the vote to Mitt Romney's 30%. Rick Santorum has dropped to 15%, just ahead of Ron Paul's 13%. Gov. Rick Perry remains at the back of the pack with 4%.

And I hear Perry has just canceled a campaign stop at Bob Jones University. Right after Iowa, I figured Perry was dropping out. He said he was returning to Texas to reassess his campaign. But the next morning he announced he was staying in. I won't hazard a guess as to why the event is being canceled.

Back to Rasmussen:

Indicative of how fluid the race remains, just 41% of likely GOP primary voters nationally are certain of how they will vote at this time. Most (51%) say they could still change their minds, and another seven percent (7%) haven’t made an initial choice yet.

The jump in Gingrich’s support nationally comes after a Monday night debate in which most analysts said the former speaker did very well.

Still, Romney has a large lead in South Carolina. Prior to the debate, he had something like 35% support to Gingrich's 21%. The primary is Saturday.

And yet with only 4% of the votes cast and so many still undecided a lot of people are still willing to see Romney anointed. As I said in Peter's post the other day, this would be like calling the winner of a NASCAR race ten laps in.

If only one of the NASCAR drivers has an unlimited budget and a topnotch crew, then you do kind of know. Barring a miracle (or a verbal tragedy)...you know.

I would edit out "still" and change "has" to "had" as Rasmussen hasn't released a post-debate SC poll yet.

I resent now the coronation of Romney by various media forces. I am now extremely wary of Romney in part because of his friends - although not all his friends, but enough to raise some alarms. Romney's campaign is too much about his opponents, it's too safe and he has demonstrated ALL the qualities of the part of the GOP that I least admire. More and more I don't think he can win the general. As well, if he does, he's not going to do anything much at all. How can he? What is his plan? I don't see him as a leader or someone who has vision. He's a manager. He will manage the welfare state, he remains someone who is unconvincing. The primary voters are seeing this, and Newt provides the relief.

How can Romney be considered a frontrunner after two primaries - one where he eked out a victory and another which lets anyone vote and Ron Paul finishes second? Please! This is another red flag.

The best part about a newt presidency is 4 years of Jon Stewart and Newt as supervillian sketches.  They crack me up to no end.

Exactly.  Zombie Newt is more powerful than we thought, we will have to dismember him and burn his heart and brain to beat him.  But he has his heart in a jar at a secret location, strictly guarded by terrifying robots with lazers.

If the GOP can't bury Newt, maybe the Dems can't either. I can see Newt go on any show, Jon Stewart, Colbert, the View, Meet the Press, and make them sorry they invited him. They will HATE him, but so what? They hate all Republicans and conservatives. They just might respect him though. But who cares what they think anyway?

The daily show spots with newt in the past were pretty civil, and entertaining.  Huckabee and Stewart always made for good TV together.

The byline on this post should be:

Newt seen and heard in debates on TV speaking in English.

People like what they hear.

The Gingrich bump is due to that fact that he's the only one with the courage to say what the rest of us are thinking.  Take a bath and get a job rings pitch-perfect with America's middle-class.  I offer him the following:

"The facial jewelry isn't cool.  It makes you look stupid,  like you fell face first into a tackle box."

A free barb so to speak.

No one has released a post-debate SC poll yet. Nor a post Palin SC endorsement poll. Nor a poll after the next debate, nor after the next surprise; it's not too late for Cain to change his mind about not endorsing, for instance, and it probably is his last chance. South Carolina is still very much in play, Florida a little less so, but still there. As they are both Winner Takes All states, anyone winning either one would be guaranteed a place in the race at least until Super Tuesday.

The media hates Newt like FOX hates Occupy Wall Street. They're wonderful for business. Incomparable. What the media (left and right) hate is dull competency.

The Daily Show's response to the race response in the debate was pretty damning, harming Newt some, harming the party more.

Is it too late to get one of the Rockefellers to endorse Romney?

Yeah I watched that.  Not as funny as the newt as a supervillian sketches the past 2 times.

I have noticed that Jon doesnt take nearly as many cheap shots when the guests are actually on his show.

Isn't that because ultimately he is a little coward?
