Washington Statue.htm

This photo -- hat tip to the Free North Carolina blog -- was taken yesterday at the NAACP's annual MLK observance at the steps of the statehouse in Columbia, South Carolina.  The bronze statue of George Washington is hidden from view so as not to offend participants of the rally.

That is so very disappointing to see. Shameful, really.

Dead (highly civil) President, who by all accounts would have blogged at ricochet.com, not welcome at NAALCP observance?

OR...maybe George couldn't stand to watch...

The air brushing might work with Huckleberry Finn but I think George is pretty safe.

That is outrageous.

Outrageous.

Did the NAACP really cover it up, so as not to offend blacks? That seems suspicious. Was it just an "optics" thing, like covering the crucifix at Georgetown? (Maybe I just can't bring myself to believe that was their intention.) If so, I have other questions:

  • Is the statue acceptable whenever the NAACP isn't around?
  • Are there many in the audience offended by George Washington, or did someone just assume they would be?
  • Were any other statues covered up? I suppose the Sean Hannity statue was just removed entirely.

I'd like to go on record as disassociating myself from that comment.

They have a grudge against poor old George because he owned slaves, dontcha know.  For too many blacks, that is the only thing about Washington's life that matters.  In the same way, Thomas Jefferson's life is about nothing but Sally Hemmings.

When I first saw the image, before I read the text, I thoght it was an incipient unveiling.

Reading the post at the other blog, they apprently hold this event there, every year, but covered it this year.

It is not like I said anything that was untrue, you know.

Why don't  you all just tone down the rhetoric?  We can't jump to conclusions about what might or might not have been meant by this.  I'm sure there is a very logical explanation and I am sure it has nothing to do with a lack of understanding of history or anything like that.

The bowdlerization of history is an absolute disgrace.  Americans need to understand the entirety of it, not that which simply appeases contemporary sensibilities.

Here's the Corner's treatment of the incident.

Reminds Jay Nordlinger of when liberals feigned outrage over Ashcroft covering up the nether regions of a nude statue in the Great Hall of Justice.  Not sure I see too much of a similarity between the two circumstances, other than the fact that they both involve statues.

Is there such a thing as an American anymore?  If George Washington offends a large portion of the population, then I guess the answer is fewer than I hoped.  If it was a stature of Nathaniel Bedford Forrest, I would understand.

Can't jump to conclusions? True.

Sure there is a logical explanation? Not so much.

Perhaps it makes most sense to say nothing either way at this point.

Or here's a silly explanation: Georgie's in that wooden half-box because they're treating him to an open-air sauna.

Diane Ellis, Ed.: Here's the Corner's treatment of the incident.

Jay Nordlinger has confirmed that the statue was boxed in to conceal it from view, in order to avoid "giving offense."

Well, if that particular crowd finds Washington's image so very offensive, I will circulate among them and cheerfully offer to relieve them of their quarters and one-dollar bills.  I am happy to do my bit for political correctness.

THAT has got to be one of the best rants I've ever read.

Right up there with Ace and Dennis Miller.

Rare form indeed.

Well struck, and it perfectly articulates a point I've been making for years.

The people who spend the most time denigrating the United States and Capitalism in general would not be able to say the blatantly false and outrageous things that they do in any other country in the world.

How does most of Europe treat people who actively try to tear down their own governments?  They sure as hell don't give them Pulitzer Prizes or Oscars.  They put them in jail, or beat them senseless, or in eastern Europe, they kill them outright.

These fools can't see that under the system they advocate for, they would be first to be eliminated.

Only the system they hate and revolt against allows them to continue to live and do whatever they please.

It is one of life's great ironies that the revolutionaries are the one most in need of the freedom they so despise.

The General was flashing an early Sarah Palin gang sign.
