From the Washington Post:
The Oscar winner has been granted life membership in the prestigious think tank [the Council of Foreign Relations].
What are Clooney's qualifications for such a position, you ask? Allow me to remind you that he played a really, really smart CIA operative in the movie Syriana.

Given his stint on ER, I assume he'll also be joining the staff of the Mayo Clinic.

I keep wondering whether there is any absurdity that liberals will not rush to embrace, thinking each time, "But surely not THIS absurd." And each time I find that I have underestimated liberals' appetite for the preposterous.

I'll have you know, Tom, that Michael Douglas and Warren Beatty are also life members of the Council on Foreign Relations. Maybe I've misunderstood the nature of the CFR. Perhaps it's just a forum for Hollywood stars to opine about foreignness and relations.

One day you'll look up from the operating table, and the preternaturally handsome surgeon will be grinning down at you and saying, "I'm not a doctor, but I played one on TV!"

R. Emmett Tyrrell, Jr., is also a member. Come on, folks, this is about fundraising. They do it. We do it. It's not like Clooney's running for vice president or anything...

The day the Hoover Institution brings on Ted Nugent as a senior fellow, you'll have a point.

Clooney isn't a senior fellow at CFR. He's just a member of the membership component of the organization. Max Boot is a fellow. When was the last time Newt Gingrich, Hoover "distinguished visiting fellow," produced a serious piece of scholarship or policy recommendation?

Oh, and a list of 10 things the country should do -- that it politically never could do -- doesn't count.
