geert-wilders

I've received quite a few stern e-mails since that interview with Mona was posted informing me that Geert Wilders is not gay. I stand corrected! I don't think much of an apology is needed, since it wasn't an insult to begin with. Also in my defense, Mr. Wilders bears some small responsibility for this misconception. His hair is pretty confusing.

So, Geert Wilders: Not gay, no matter his resemblance to the young Liberace, who was also, for the record, not a Muslim. And no matter what, Geert should not be on trial.

Other entries to add to the "not that there would be anything wrong with that, but you're confused" list would be the e-mails from people who are very glad that Muslim women like me are speaking out.

Claire -- totally understandable. I usually jump to hasty conclusions about the sexuality of European men too. Maybe it's just a different aesthetic?

Yes, with nicknames like "Mozart" and "Captain Peroxide", it can be a bit um... disorienting.

What a sweet, charming mistake.

Anyhow, this post made my morning. And has me wondering: why can't we have fabulous nicknames for our politicians like "Captain Peroxide"?

He's sort of a Leo DiCaprio/George Michael hybrid. Further proof that your slip is understandable.

You did throw me for a loop there. When I heard it, I went immediately to Wikipedia and did a Find on "gay" & "homosexual" and come up with nothing, so I figured you had a secret Euro-knowledge advantage on the rest of us. Pim, on the other hand...

To add to the confusion, I would like to point out that Wilders is apparently spawning a fashionista musical movement in Amsterdam, complete with Gaga-esque niqabs made out of ladies' wigs. The pompadour-cum-mowhawk (blond, of course) combined with the stalker-stache on the lead singer has to be seen to believed.

It is like A Clockwork Orange meets The Village People.

(Oops, the above link is for YouTube. Sorry, Claire.)

You're not Muslim? Who knew?

I'm guessing you were thinking of Pim Fortuyn.

The designer man bags that European men carry around are also quite confusing...

I'm going to assume that they meant that you look good in muslin.

Can we stop with the stupid labeling?

Why do some gay men (mercifully very few these days) claim sexuality is not a choice, then insist bi men have to "choose" one side or the other?

Could it be that, *gasp*, Geert is bi and doesn't care? Or--what a shock--he's gay and also doesn't care?

Even if he's gay, perhaps he feels fine with his cultural identity and doesn't want to switch? Why do the stupid labels have to matter so much? Why does "gay culture" exist at all? This is kindof an emotional issue for me; American gay culture--I can't speak for the Dutch--screws young gay men every bit as much as straight culture, in my opinion.

Sorry for the emotional rant, but it kindof needs to be said. The Muslims have it right in refusing to commit to one side or the other in the first place.

Good point, Joseph. But I guess it's irresistible to speculate about -- ever since the neo-nazi Austrian Jorg Haider died in a car crash and all sorts of stories started tumbling out. And after openly gay Dutch politician Pim Fortuyn was assassinated in the street for being "anti-Muslim."

And of course there's the hair.

I thought Wilders was taking posing cues from this picture....

Hey! My hair remains its natural lustrous brown. On good days, maybe, I could muster that kind of upsweep, but most of the time it sits on my head like a sad little hamster.

I was pretty sure he was not gay. His speech and demeanor are typical of a genuine XY.

This thread cannot end well. Geert Wilders is a first class hero fighting for the soul of his nation. I have no more interest in his sexuality than in any other public figure's sexuality. That is Page 6 stuff to titillate the back benchers.

So I propose we waive the five day waiting period for Elizabeth Edwards and Tipper Gore, leave the tales of Barney Frank travails to the usual suspects, and focus on addressing that fiscal promiscuity issue.

And if O'Donnell succeeds in balancing the budget and retiring some of those extra Federal departments via witchcraft, 'tis better done all the same.  It's not like we've gotten there through stout hearts and doughty spirits.  If it takes frigging Elves then let's all kick in to help with the travel expenses.
