Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D-Arizona), who was shot in the head a year ago while meeting constituents outside a Tucson supermarket, has announced that she will step down from her position this week to focus on her recovery:

What a brutally difficult year this has been for her and for those who love her. May she go from strength to strength.

Yes, I hope so.

She is my congress-person - rumor has it that her husband may stand in her place - I won't vote for him, either, but I wish them both well.

Giffords has been the topic of several conversations I've had over the past week or so (coincidentally in the first case, I don't think she'd been in the news much prior to yesterday).  The unanimous reaction, across partisan and/or ideological lines, was (before the announcement), "It'd be for the best if she didn't run/stepped down," and afterwards, "Good for her."

I certainly wish her the best, but why on earth did this not take place 11 or so months ago?  Tucson has been without representation the entire time, and they seemed perfectly okay with that - very odd.

I disagree entirely with her politics, but salute her tremendous courage and determination.  G-d bless her!

Will someone (other than me) please point out that just a few short months ago the Democrats were trying to get her to run for the Senate? Oooooo! She's been shot in the head! We can use that!

I wish her well. But there isn't enough shame in the world to poor down around her party.

She has a very capable staff, so I for one was OK with her taking as much time as she needed. It's good she made the decision now.

Amen, Judith!  Thank you for this...
