This just appeared on Haaretz:

After weeks of heated debate over plans for an Islamic community center near Ground Zero - the site of the 9/11 attacks on New York - it seems Muslim leaders will soon back down, agreeing to move to a new site.

The decision follows a high-profile campaign against the project that included advertisements on New York buses showing images of the burning Twin Towers, an iconic landmark razed when al-Qaida terrorists flew packed passenger planes into them in 2001. The New York Republican party is also said to be planning a hostile television campaign.

Sources in New York said on Monday that Muslim religious and business leaders will announce plans to abandon the project in the next few days.

Anyone seeing this Stateside yet?

Yep, they're already reporting that it's not so.

Where? I can't find any confirmations or denials.

Steve Emmerson was on Bill Bennet's radio show this morning. He said he has acquired tapes of some lectures by the imam in question which include some naughty statements. He is currently combing through them and will release them next week. He seems confident that the mosque can not survive the contents of these lectures. Wonder if the latest rumors, if true, are pre-empting Emmerson's findings.

The only thing that could stop this mosque now is refusal by the Saudi's to finance it. Muslim radicals long ago learned how to use our laws against us and there is no legal basis for denying approval to build, now that the NYC Landmarks board has paved the way. Bloomberg and the New York elites will not back down and the media will continue to ignore the obvious about the Imam.

Perhaps Obama needs to jet off for a deep-bowing session with the Saudi King.

Saw this yesterday actually and it got NO play here except on their official Twitter account, where they insist it isn't true. That said...Politico and The Daily Beast are both reporting that the leaders are meeting with Governor Patterson tomorrow to discuss other potential sites. There may be more truth to this item than their PR representatives would like to acknowledge. Or even know about.

Here's a local angle for Ricochet. When Peter returns he can express opinions on the new mosque in his neighborhood.

New Mosque in Palo Alto.

The article is from the local high school newspaper, who did a nice job with the report. The mosque will be several blocks from an enormous, new Jewish community center, and the mosque organizer has indicated a desire to get to know them.

"she hopes to communicate and form good relations with the neighboring Jewish Community Center by exchanging ideas and by visiting each other."

This being Palo Alto they will need to deal with concerns over noise, traffic and parking, but will probably get the approvals they need. Interestingly, if there is resistance it will likely come from the area's large Hindu population.
