Re: GOP Debate Recap
Sorry, Newt - there hasn't been a gov't-run training program that has worked

Nope - it's not working for me.

Re: GOP Debate Recap
Perry disappointed.
Romney, though no conservative champion, came out looking better.
The whole thing will get a lot more interesting if Sarah Palin jumps in.

I find myself leaning heavily toward Herman Cain and Newt Gingrich.
I know!

Perry seemed drunk and tired. His performance was very disappointing.

Re: GOP Debate Recap
Worst debate ever. It was so bad it almost crippled the live chat. Drew is spot on.

For the record, I don't really object to an intoxicated Presidency, as long as he keeps his hands off the checkbook. Cain at Treasury would keep him in line.

I did begin to wonder if he was on some type of back pain medication.

W used to go to bed around 9 PM or so, and there was much worry in the 2004 debates that he might run out of steam because they ran so much past his usual bedtime. I wonder if Perry might be running into the same problem.

Re: GOP Debate Recap
interesting comment from Ann Althouse's son, John:
9:50 - Romney attacks Perry for giving more money to illegal immigrants than citizens to go to the University of Texas. "It makes no sense." In fact, it makes so little sense that it's hard to believe that's even the real policy.

Re: GOP Debate Recap
I began watching the debate highly dissatisfied with Romney, moderately disappointed in Cain's early stumbles, hopeful for Perry, admiring of Newt, but neither trusting him or his ability to move forward to a national victory, and not really interested in the other candidates. Open to all if they could prove themselves, and wishing to see a clear leader emerge...
After watching this I am thoroughly disappointed with Perry, he seemed very off his game, at best he was un-prepared, too general, clumsy, and petty. The other candidates all had moments that impressed me, even candidates I either don't care for or I had written off, like Paul and Santorum. Gingrich was as good as ever and more so, and Herman Cain came off very, very well - both forced me to reconsider supporting them, even though I think they have little chance in the general election.
At times Romney showed himself to be very good and yet I hated some of his suggestions and rhetorical tropes. The format itself was awful, simply awful. I don't care about the endless word clouds, or videos of citizens, and google ad placement and the chime were obnoxious.

Re: GOP Debate Recap
As noted by others I want a meat and potatoes debate, I want the two to five front runners talking for 15 minutes to a half hour really laying out in detail what they believe, what they hope to do, how they will tie them together. Also where were the questions on Europe, the market, China, Fast and Furious, Iran, Solyndra, etc., it was all very 1990's in so many ways...sigh...I really think Huntsman, Bachmann, Johnson should be removed from future debates. It is clear that Romney is quickly regaining his position as front runner, and has regained energy and focus, largely as a result of the pressure from the other candidates, this is highly disappointing, because I agree with Paul Rahe's analysis of Romney's likely political trajectory, as a managerial progressive who will do little to tackle the systemic problems we face as a nation. Perry, who I was cautiously optimistic about, was a just mess. Perry looked sleepy by the end.A lousy night, it looked like these guys and one gal could actually snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Re: GOP Debate Recap
Yeah, Perry certainly didn't have a good night. I keep wanting to like him more than I actually do. Romney says mostly good things, but sounds like a robot programed to do so. I still have zero reason to trust him on much of anything. Gingrich would be great if he could serve somewhere far away from the trappings of D.C. Herman Cain had the best performance tonight. Unfortunately, it likely won't do much for his chances. Everyone else was largely forgettable.
I don't even know why I keep watching these.
