At the risk of self-promotion... and in the hope of getting a couple of laughs... allow me to present my full commentary on the current troubles in Israel.

Interesting. I think you weakened your own thesis by including Pat Buchanan among your examples. Assuming he is, in fact, anti-Semitic -- out of charity, I tend to give him some of his remarks the benefit of the doubt -- then he seems to dispel the theory that all Jew-haters are dirt bags. Buchanan hardly fits the description.

Preach it! I'm sick of the double standard in the U.N. and with the "liberazi." Israel is vilified as the most evil of evil nations while China murders falun gong practitioners, Saudi Arabia allows women to be tortured and murdered in the name of keeping their families "pure," and Hamas uses mentally disabled girls as homicide bombers. Where's the widespread international vilification of those regimes? Riiiiiight. Israel's sooo baaaad...

I reacted the same way, Brandon. Buchanan has said some ridiculous things and might indeed be anti-Semitic, for all I know. But the quote in the video, without context, isn't damning. To speak of Hitler's "gifts" and "genius" isn't necessarily to deny that he was evil. Evil people can be gifted, too. They just misuse those gifts.

To be honest, I'm not super interested in Israel. I certainly don't hate them, and a nation of Jewish people doing their own thing is fine and a-ok but of little interest to myself. Live and let live.
But throw in Islamic terrorism and my friendly indifference changes to solidarity. Islamic terrorism not only expresses the desire to wipe out Israel, but is actively attempting to do so (and fortunately failing). And after Israel, they want to conquer all of Christendom (well, the entire world actually). Israel's enemies won't leave us alone if Israel were to be destroyed. And conservative friends of mine who mindlessly parrot leftist cant on this one issue of Israel and the Palestineans etc. etc. would do well to pay attention to the jihadists waging war against the Jews. Cause Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, Atheists, Agnostics, et al are next on their list.

Mr. Klavan, you rock. I especially liked your Christmas ghost story. I hadn't been scared since I read "'Salem's Lot" back in the 80s.
