Over at NRO, Jonah Goldberg posts this video.  The only comment he puts on it is "a useful video".  I'm not going to add any more than that.

Hmmm. Did I enjoy that so much just because of the pretty music?

See now as a Conservative, I would have presented the findings as...

Yet more proof that the quickest way to the heart of a liberal is by blasting candy and rainbows up their poop-chute.

Are more women Democrats? Do men want to be associated with cute things? Puppies make me imagine teenage girls saying, "OMG, they're so cuuuute. " I am also surprised this has not been picked up by the Romney/Obama dog stories. E.g. Could you eat this cute thing? Or could you put this on the roof of your car?

That went up on Facebook about 2 seconds after viewing. Not that I was overwhelmed by its charm and puppyliciousness at all!

The,

Later the editors of Scientific American were interviewed.   They were quoted as saying "DATA WE DON'T NEED NO STINKIN DATA!  WE ALREADY GOT DE CONCLUSION!!"

The interviewer crouched lower down behing the rocks and checked to make sure he had plenty of ammo.

Jim

Why can't liberals understand that those puppies will just grow up to be filthy dogs? Kittens on the other hand  ------------------->

The puppies sold that video to me as well.  Huzzah!

Did they do a "no pictures" control group?  Were the symbols distributed randomly for which went with pretty and which with ugly?  Did they do a neutral picture control group?

Replace the puppies with a cuddly newborn child for three seconds, then again with the same newborn squalling and see the change in response.

Then again, a Liberal would be offended and blame the Republicans for the crying baby.

Perhaps the conservatives would have been more receptive to kittens! I'm a conservative and I LOVE cats. I would have gone for a kittens picture. I hate to think what would have been made of that. I also LIKE spiders.

Whose money did they spend to do this "study"?

That's what I want to know.

Pretty much every study I have seen over who was smarter, nicer, more charitable, better looking, etc. seems to have concluded that people like the people doing the study have more positive attributes and the scum from the other category have more negative attributes.  As a college friend of mine used to say:  There are two kinds of people, those who divide the world into two kinds of people and those who don't.

A more appropriate abstract for this paper would have gone something like this:

This study produced no meaningful results whatsoever. It was a complete waste of money and intellectual resources.

Then again, that would be an honest abstract for the vast majority of sociological research. Tom Lehrer says it well in this song.

They, in an ivory steeple
Far away from all people
They do research in sociology!

The secret to reading any scientific paper is to look at just the data. The conclusions drawn from the data are always up for debate, but in a good study the data is solid and in a great study the data is solid and only supports on set of conclusions.

As an alum and benefactor, probably mine.  I apologize.  Although I enjoyed the music, and I think I married the girl they used in the study.  She now eats meat, votes Republican, and kicks puppies.
