I think I'm coming down with a cold. I'm having a little bit of trouble focusing on the news. I'm pretty sure, though, that it's universally bad.

That said, if you'd like some perspective on it all, follow this Twitter feed: He's live Tweeting the Second World War, as it happens on this date and time in 1939. I loved this one:

Khrushchev: "All we have to do is raise our voices a little bit, and the Finns will obey. We fire 1 shot, they'll surrender."

Also, I did not know there was a Samoan Nazi Party. Did you?

Fascinating, Claire.  Wish I had the time to follow this.

It's Twitter! How can you not have time to follow something on Twitter? The whole point of Twitter is that everything is reduced to 140 characters!

No. But the presence of German traders and plantation owners - and the fact that (part of) Samoa was a German protectorate from 1900 to 1914 - makes it highly plausible.

Actually, more than you'd ever want to know here.

These things add up.  200 new tweets every morning plus stuff during the day is already too much.

But these ones will send me looking things up.  No time.

The best line is: "

The Samoan Nazi Party had to compromise on racial purity; one committee member was married to a Jewish woman and two others were married to Samoans."

The Finns were successful several times in fighting the USSR, but due to the Communists changing sides after the Nazi invasion, none of the allies would support the Finns against Stalin after 1940. Finns were outnumbered 2:1 with little materiel to support Finnish efforts.

Instead the Finns turned to Nazi Germany to arm and support their fight against the USSR. In the end, after several stalemates, and remarkable courage on the part of the Finns, the USSR annexed about 10% of Finnish territories and demanded the Finns fight another war to kick out the Nazis from their country.

After WWII, our murderous ally the USSR ensured Finland was declared a hostile power for their pact with Nazi Germany, and forced to pay reparations.

RealTimeWWII is the coolest idea I've seen on Twitter. Can't wait to see who wins!

Too Cool!  I listen to WWII news broadcasts on my iPod at night if I can't sleep, and one of my favorites (seems a bit weird to admit this) is a one-hour compilation of Elmer Davis' 5-minute summaries covering the Russian attempted invasion of Finland in fall of '39.  I've clicked "Follow".
