Feinting with Damned Praise

From Nate Silver’s New York Times column: "And Barack Obama obviously has a lot of weight to bear from the lukewarm economic recovery."
Uh, okay. Let us know when it gets to room temperature.

I have a lot of weight to bear because I eat too much. Somebody should do something about that. Definitely not my responsibility

It's the kind of economy that you really want kept far below room temperature:

Having seen an Obamacovery, I tremble at the thought of an Obamapression. Burying guns and gold in the yard under cover of darkness. I take no small comfort in the fact that the Fay Lady is hemorrhaging money and readers at an unsustainable rate. (And undoubtedly expects a federal subsidy in the next term if it hasn't already been quietly wired.)

Obama doesn't bear that weight. Someone else bears that.

Re: Feinting with Damned Praise
In place of "lukewarm," I like John Donne's little formulation, "wintered and frozen." [Full disclosure: he was talking about the human soul without God; but if an inanimate thing like an economy can be "wintered and frozen," ours is].
So here's the new sentence: "And Barack Obama obviously has a lot of weight to bear from the wintered and frozen economic recovery."
Sounds about right.

Re: Feinting with Damned Praise
It seems to me that the President set out to recast the United States along the lines of the European model. This means high level of state involvement in the economy, massive regulation, high structural unemployment, high levels of dependency on Govt., strong unions, lower growth rates.
I think he has been remarkably successful in achieving his goal. Any weight felt by his success is by design.
Its not like he hid this in his 2008 campaign. It was exactly the reason that Rush hoped he would fail - to an avalanche of criticism. The adage that in democracy, you get the Govt. you deserve applies here.
