Fantasy Campaign 2012
None of the Republican presidential candidates is ringing my bell. Romney’s albatross is Romneycare. Herman Cain’s weakness on foreign policy and support for a 9% VAT-like consumption tax gives me pause. As for Perry, let’s face it: Is America ready for another less-than-articulate Texan in the White House?
Why can’t we build our own ideal conservative candidate by selecting from the best qualities of those running? I’m thinking of the political equivalent of an Xbox fantasy football game. My ideal candidate would combine Romney’s preternatural ability to stay on message while effortlessly reeling off facts with Cain’s steely conservative spine wrapped in Reaganesque optimism. Rick Perry would supply the economic program. Oh, and John Huntsman’s hair would be terrific.
What does your ideal candidate look like?

If ever a post was more perfectly suited to the expert ministrations of Ricochet's own EJ Hill, I have yet to come across it. If I could add just a single element, it would be this:
EJ, are you out there?

This is just going to depress everyone. It's not always healthy to wish for something you can never really have.

Re: Fantasy Campaign 2012
Does it have to only be those running? I think Palin's legs need to be in there somewhere.

Re: Fantasy Campaign 2012
I agree. There isn't anyone perfect and there won't be.
What do I want in a candidate? I wish Rick Perry did better at debates. I don't think he's that bad in non-debate formats-- I think he's pretty good; but the debate thing has me very nervous about him and Obama side by side. I don't agree with Rick Perry on everything, but that's what I'd like for Christmas, if anyone is doing secret santa. (Although, I admit that Rick Perry's tax platform has me a bit uncomfortable.)

Careful. That's the kind of thing that got Herman Cain in trouble.

I'd also include Sarah Palin's rural roots.

She's a runner. We need someone who can go the distance. The dirty minds around here...

He's bald, a bit on the short side, and at this moment he's probably riding his Harley somewhere near Indianapolis.

Yep, that's who I was hoping would run. I'm still surprised Jindal seems like a forgotten man. It's hard to believe we have a golden opportunity and wind up with a slate of second-tier candidates that don't excite more than minor segments of the base.

Re: Fantasy Campaign 2012
I want a soulless automaton who doesn't actually believe in anything, but who is smart enough to know that you have to govern on the platform you ran on, whether you believe in it or not. Or, to put it slightly differently, get behind whoever is the candidate and quityerbitchin.

Re: Fantasy Campaign 2012
I think governors make the best presidents, so maybe a republican governor of a blue state, so that we know s/he can win over independents. And preferably one that's had to deal with immigration so that s/he knows how to deal with it. But an outsider, someone who's started up and grown a business in the private sector, so that s/he knows what barriers exist for job creation.
There will be a lot of spending bills, so a governor with a solid record of vetoing 700+ bills would be nice. And creating a budget surplus by slashing government while never raising taxes, that's important too.
I'd want someone that doesn't give up, the kind of guy that would continue to climb up Mount Everest with a broken leg. After seeing Obama-fatigue, that kind of commitment would serve us well.
I've always liked the sound of "Barry Swanson", so if his name could rhyme with that, I'd be pretty happy.
Can you imagine how that kind of a candidate would fare? Tea Party favorite! Rocking the debates left and right! Well, I can dream...

Where is EJ, I wonder? Busy at work improving on Peter's clever drawing? I hope so.

Re: Fantasy Campaign 2012
Diane Ellis beat me to the punch, but Bobby Jindal (brilliant, Rhodes scholar, ethnic minority, Christian (Catholic), solid conservative, experienced AND young would have been a reasonable second choice.
