FBI raids antiwar protestors' homes
Anyone following this? Antiwar protestors’ homes raided by the FBI in Minneapolis and Chicago:
On Friday, according to (Mick) Kelly -- who was at work at the time -- agents with guns drawn broke down the door of his second-floor apartment in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood looking for proof that he has supported terrorist organizations in Colombia and the Middle East.
No one was arrested in the raids. Kelly and the other subjects of the searches have been ordered to appear before a federal grand jury next month in Chicago.
Specifically, the warrant for the raid of Kelly's apartment sought notebooks, address books, photos and maps of Kelly's travels to the Palestinian territories, Colombia and in the United States on behalf of the Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO). It also sought information on his personal finances and those of the group, on his "potential co-conspirators" and recruitment efforts for the group.
My eyebrows went up when I read the list of people nailed in the raid, because I knew one of them back in college. Mick Kelly was a short-order cook at the restaurant where I worked. Cheerful guy, hard-working - he’d get serious if the Issues of the Day came up, but there’s not a lot of time to discuss Central American policy when you’re trying to get the Eggs Benedict for table A-3. (This was the time in American history when colleges were enflamed by the juntas of Central America, and full of contempt for the "Freedom Fighters" who were battling the noble Sandinistas.) Apparently his ideas have remained unchanged since he was in college, which for some is a badge of honor.
Or is it a sign of intellectual rigidity? Aside from some of my cultural and aesthetic tastes, I’ve come to reevaluate most of what I held dear when I was 22. I’d be a bit nervous if I hadn’t. Which raises the question of whether your brain ossifies when you hit middle-age, and you reject reevaluating your reevaluations.

Re: FBI raids antiwar protestors' homes
I was never of the left. My parents ran a small family farm and were Republicans. However, while we talked politics in general terms, I had little background in political theory.
Even though I was an instinctual conservative, for years I called myself a moderate. Then I decided it was time to read and think about these issues. With the help of Hayek, WFB, Tom Sowell, and many others I have finally thought these issues through to the point that I know I'm a real conservative and can tell you why.
One of my favorite examples of a man who went through this kind of self-analysis is Malcolm Muggeridge (after doing so, he found himself on the right).
We fail ourselves if we do not re-evaluate our youthful political propensities in the light of adult experience. Sounds like Mick never did.

Perhaps he was secretly cooking Eggs Benedict Arnold? Fair enough for a 22 year-old, but at his age? I'm not sure it's intellectual rigidity because that would suggest his positions are a product of intellect. When I see men and women of a certain age trying to be radical chic, it always strikes me as a refusal to grow up.

Re: FBI raids antiwar protestors' homes
I had a flashback to the 60s when I read that headline and not of the LSD kind. By the time I got to college, streaking was the only anti-establishment activity that was a sensation. Of course there was the usual assortment of college leftists; but by the 70s they just seemed like character actors. Some of us were disappointed as we realized we had missed out on something big but we got over it in a week or two.

But Jeanne, nude protests are the only ones to take seriously. Why? It shows commitment, that's why. Commitment and naughty bits. That's why PETA is so annoying. Rather go naked than wear fur? Prove it, starlets! But they never do.
Eggs Benedict? Was he serving RINO's, or the guy from Different Strokes? No wonder he snapped. Hollandaise-induced terrorism.

Hollandaise-induced terrorism ?
Pretty sure we Americans coddle the artists and murder the eggs, whereas in Holland, they coddle the eggs and ................
This Mick character was probably sending his egg money to the defense fund of Bouyeri. Lock him up before the DOJ decide he's ethnic.

I know we could all be next, but doesn't the FBI kicking in the door of some leftist over-aged hippie just send a frission of glee through you? It does me.
I remeber a buddy of mine, who was on the university student council saying to me one day when I asked him why he voted to pass a resolution to free some commies being held in a European jail: "I figure if the world protests these commies will just get pounded harder by the cops." Sure hope he was right. I know this sounds too much like schadenfreude, but lets face it guys, schadenfreude is the best freude, and I'm not afraid to admit it.

Re: FBI raids antiwar protestors' homes
As a public school teacher I have worked with a lot of lefties who, even in their fifties, were still espousing the leftist crap they learned in college. They may have cut their hair, but they were still smoking pot or marching in anti-war protests. They are the kind who watch the McNeil/Lehr Report, and maybe read the local paper, and consider themselves informed.
In my own life, I tried for years to say I was a moderate, but finally realized that most moderates are just hand wringing lefties. After the Clintons took office, I voted for my first Republican in Newt's revolution and have been moving to the right ever since. One of the best things that ever happened to me was a friend giving me a subscription to Commentary. It changed my world persective quite dramatically.
How does someone keep the same world view they were given in college by Ward Churchill's mentor? It has never made any sense to me. Who am I but a knuckle dragging gun totin' Bible cleaving Tea Partier.

I am still unclear as to what these guys did. Imagine if this had happened under Bush. Is it too trite to say that? I refuse to give up being outraged at the MSM double standard. Until it is gone, or the MSM is gone, my anger will remain. No Dem could be elected POTUS without it.
