Wholeheartedly agree. It's what glasnost wrought. Once those behind the Iron Curtain understood what they had been promised with every 5-year plan for some 50 or 60 years, millions in the west had had for decades (nice homes, beautiful neighborhoods, new car models every year, supermarket shelves stuffed with food) I believe that ignited the flame of the eventual bloodless revolution in 1989. Of course, it helped that Reagan labeled the Soviet Union the Evil Empire - which is what they were.

I loved that commercial!  It was taken off the air because it was offensive.

Claire Berlinski, Ed.

I would be laughing at this (I have many times used this commercial to explain what the Soviet Union was about to young people who, apparently, like my predecessors on yesterday's tour "do not know who is Stalin") but I just nearly a half hour waiting on line while that woman--still dressed like that--frowned at my passport.

People may forget that it was the "detente" folks that protested the loudest. And in the loudest irony possible, it was alcoholic Boris "don't call me Badanov, Natasha" Yeltsin who knew the jig was up with Gorbachev when Boris walked down a massive American supermarket aisle and realized the Soviet Union had been circling the final flush of history's toilet bowl for decades.

Perhaps some enterprising YouTube video artist could do an Iowahawk- Klavan on the Culture style send up of Hamas's menu choices for exterminating Israel with Michael Moore, Jimmy Carter and the Daily Kos expressing their outrage at the drive through window.

And then Subway came along, and completely blew Wendy's away in the "choice of toppings" department.

Now I'm hungry...

Thanks for posting this ad. I remember it and I was recently searching for it on behalf of a Russian friend.  She replied to the effect that Humor always touches a vein of truth.
