Only when one has lost all curiousity about the future has one reached the age to write an autobiography.

Ouch. Poor Barry.

Though I'll note that 273 autobiographies might be apropos if one is a Marxist presuming the certainty of the dialectic progression.

Brilliant!  Of course!  BHO is already (been there a while, in fact) at the end of history, like a good, smug, snobbish little last man.

Did someone say Arthur Koestler? Did you tell Claire?

Weird coincidence--Koestler's name just came up in our panel exactly as I read this comment. I mean, exactly in the same minute.

I fell in love with Sarah Palin when, during her convention speech, she mentioned that Obama had written two autobiographies and yet not one significant piece of legislation.

Splendid quote and great association to the man who wrote two autobiographies even before becoming President. Perhaps there's a dozen or so more that we will be graced with...as well as Sinking A Putt While America Sinks Into Oblivion - My Most Impressive Golfing Tips by Barack Obama.

Barry looks back on his life and says, "How exciting--everyone will want to know about me."

I look back and say,"Wow, that was really boring the first time through--why should I bore myself again by reliving it in print."  (Note:  To any publishers out there, I am happy to make up some interesting anecdotes about myself if you're will to pay me).

Ever hear of Mary Karr?  She's done three autobiographies already:  Liars's Club, Cherry and Lit.

In the end, Waugh lost all curiosity and wrote the Sword of Honour trilogy.

And the world is a far better place.

That reminds me I have to phone the Troy/Richard/John Free TV giveaway sting line before Tuesday. I guess I'll have to make up some goofy name and LA eatery location to throw the Seals off my tail.

Amen to that.  It's Waugh at his best.

I've long divided mankind into two groups - those who appreciate Evelyn Waugh and those who don't get him.

For many years, I found myself unable to explain to folks outside Manhattan what the appeal of the city was.  And then I stumbled upon this quote from Waugh, who had only visited New York City for two weeks:

"New York is a city with a neurosis in the air that the inhabitants mistake for energy."

Mr Obama obtained a Nobel Peace Prize, US Presidency and several $Millions, so I think he has the last laugh, at our expense.

What price glory?  A hundred years from now, people will still be reading Waugh and appreciating his tortured genius.  Obama will be remembered, if at all, as we now remember Franklin Pierce and Andrew Johnson (boring, failed presidents).

In the meantime, he'll live in comfort.  Let's just make sure he changes addresses in January 2013.

What price glory?

If you gain the whole world and lose your own soul in the bargain?

I have always had trouble with long division myself.
