Author of two riveting biographies, including Amazing Grace: William Wilberforce and the Heroic Campaign to End Slavery, and more recently Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy, Eric Metaxas delivered a powerful speech this morning at the National Prayer Breakfast on genuine prayer, faith in Christ, and the transformative power of the Gospel throughout history.

He also spoke in defense of the unborn and of the Biblical view of marriage—especially courageous, considering President Obama was in attendance—but he coupled his defense of these things with his exhortation to love and pray for our enemies, political and otherwise.

The talk is worthwhile. Have a watch.

Metaxas' biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer is one of the finest books I've read in years.

Thanks Diane.

I just finished the Bonhoeffer book a couple of weeks ago.  It drags just a tad in the middle (or maybe my lips were just getting tired), but I agree with tabula -- an excellent read.

He was pretty gutsy.  He built up to it with a great deal of skill.

I wonder if Obama will read the book.

I had the opportunity to attend a talk Mr. Metaxas gave in December (there's a podcast of it somewhere - maybe I can hunt it down) and it was very good.  I am currently reading the Bonhoeffer biography and agree with those above that it's excellent.

My bet:  not a chance.

Mollie Hemingway, Ed.

It's a great book and that was an incredibly courageous speech to give.

Wow. Great point, Percival. Metaxas did do a fantastic job of building to the point where he could 'go there' and truly talk about abortion and homosexuality in a transcendent and helpful way while standing six feet from the president. What a gutsy speech!

Terrific!  I only wish they would have had the camera on the President a little more so we could see if he was squirming.  I know that's not really looking at him through the eyes of Jesus, but I can't you love your enemies and still enjoy seeing them made uncomfortable?

His sense of humor comes from a base of humility, and it is incredibly winsome. Thanks for the tip--he was very effective, not only in having the courage to say what he did, but in challenging us to love and show grace to our enemies, an exhortation that I need to heed.

I set the Bonnhoeffer book aside about halfway through, not because I was bored, but because I had other things to attend to. It's an amazing and beautifully written biography about an amazingly charismatic and deeply intelligent man. I'll be picking it up again soon to plow my way through to the end. Thanks for the post Diane.

So, when can Metaxas join the Ricochet podcast? Would be interested on what he really thinks of the Obama administration and agenda if he'd be willing to share.

I second this.  I thoroughly enjoyed his speech (preaching) at the prayer breakfast.  Thanks for pointing us to it!
