Eric Holder's Morning Could Be Better
I'm actually not a fan of voter identification laws, but many on the right are. Eric Holder has condemned efforts to strengthen voter identification laws. So that makes this situation, as described by John Fund, embarrassing:
Filmmaker James O’Keefe demonstrated just how easy it is on Tuesday when he dispatched an assistant to the Nebraska Avenue polling place in Washington where Attorney General Holder has been registered for the last 29 years. O’Keefe specializes in the same use of hidden cameras that was pioneered by the recently deceased Mike Wallace, who used the technique to devastating effect in exposing fraud in Medicare claims and consumer products on 60 Minutes. O’Keefe’s efforts helped expose the fraud-prone voter-registration group ACORN with his video stings, and has had great success demonstrating this year in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Minnesota just how easy it is to obtain a ballot by giving the name of a dead person who is still on the rolls. Indeed, a new study by the Pew Research Center found at least 1.8 million dead people are still registered to vote. They aren’t likely to complain if someone votes in their place.
In Washington, it was child’s play for O’Keefe to beat the system. O’Keefe’s assistant used a hidden camera to document his encounter with the election worker at Holder’s polling place.

Re: Eric Holder's Morning Could Be Better
I don't think there is a libertarian argument against voter ID. If by your vote you have the power to raise my taxes, rezone my property, send me to war, or a host of other things done at the implicit barrel of the government's gun, it's incumbent upon you to prove that you have the right to do so. In the 18 years that I've been involved with the Georgia Libertarian Party - Georgia is a voter ID state - I have yet to hear an argument that trumps the above.
Casey--I completely agree with you, and that's the position of most of the Libertarians that I have ever met. Which was why when Mollie stated that she was "not a fan", I was curious to find out whether or not there was a substantive argument of which I was unaware behind that position.

Re: Eric Holder's Morning Could Be Better
So liberals support card check for union voting, but oppose Voter ID laws? Do I have that right?
Yahtzee.

Sorry, Mollie. It's impossible for Eric Holder to be embarrassed.
The fact that the man, as our Attorney General, is an embarrassment beyond measure is completely lost on him...and most Americans.
But this video is a good one!

There's not. Don't get me wrong, I don't like the gummint any more than the average mountain man -- doomsday prepping is a sport, up here -- but it is an egregious claim on another person's property to insist on absolute anonymity when showing up to vote on how and where to spend taxes. Which is, really, what every election is about. Taxes eat up a third of the fruits of my labor, meaning I work until April essentially for free. As one of the 49.4% of Americans who actually pays, how that confiscated money is spent matters to me a great deal more than someone's paranoia about government tracking capabilities.

That's brilliant. Thanks for that nugget, Casey.
We conservatives need to keep making the moral arguments against big government and wealth redistribution.

Re: Eric Holder's Morning Could Be Better
In a representative republic, the integrity of the process directly affects the integrity of the result. As one who has lived under Governor Christine Gregoire instead of Dino Rossi, a few hundred dead people voting for a candidate can radically change the course of public policy. The franchise is a central pillar of consensual government. I understand the libertarian desire to limit what government knows, but when I have to show my ID to use my debit card or buy certain over-the-counter medications, it seems a small price to pay to reduce the amount of voter fraud to make voters prove they are who they say they are.

Cool. Just saw a local (D.C.) news teaser on this story. The angle is about voter fraud.

Thank you very much!
There's no one making this argument on the national stage except for Ron Paul, but it gets drowned out by all the kookiness. We need everyone to make the moral argument, not just the libertarians.

Re: Eric Holder's Morning Could Be Better
Where I work, 25 miles from the Wisconsin border, we have students who put up posters for meetings on how to maximize the vote, and there have been prosecutions for voting in Mn and Wisconsin, one live, one by absentee.
We make it even easier with the "same day registration", also known as the "Elect Jesse Ventura!" law, and our secretary of state has been associated with ACORN for years. In close elections, such as Coleman-Franken, the lefty always wins recounts. Always. And more and more races are close.
