If you've got an hour and a half of free time this weekend -- and a serious Hayek jones -- you might consider tuning in to the YouTube channel of our friends over at the Cato Institute, who hosted a fascinating discussion on the great Austrian's "The Constitution of Liberty" yesterday. While you'll learn a lot from distinguished Hayek scholar Bruce Caldwell, the main attraction is watching our own Richard Epstein square up with (and sit next to) George Soros. The intro to the next podcast has just written itself ...

Perfectly fantastic.  Rob himself couldn't have scripted this.

Richard Epstein, rock star.

Just finished listening to the audio while I was working.  Very interesting discussion.

I have more respect for Soros now, something I find myself surprised to be saying.  He didn't address how effective regulation can be implimented given inability of regulators to have perfect knowledge and the fallible, and even corruptable, nature of the human regulators themselves.

I think the Austrian point of view, which claims less than the Chicago school, is a sounder system, but unfortunately Soros didn't address that more cautious position in his remarks.

I would just like the opportunity to say "good morning" to Dr. Epstein then stand back and see where he goes - as long as I could add "please speak a little more slowly on my behalf" before he replies.

Demaratus, I agree with you on Mr. Soros as well. He's a famous bogeyman of we on the right but I have to admit I'd never really heard any of his views from him directly. A good reminder to listen to all sides.

And last, I would never argue with Dr. Epstein about anything. Even if I knew the sky to be blue, he could make a case to the contrary that would demolish any argument I could make in its favor.

Fortunately most of the time Epstein is right, so you likely wouldn't find yourself in this argument, thank heavens=)

Allow me to edit me previous comment: Soros did point out the imperfection of regulators near the end, so good for him.  But, I think he does show that while his arguments are eminently reasonable, like when he says "regulation is a necessary evil", he seems to still be acting, and speaking most of the time, with the presumption not as much against regulation as it should be, as Epstein argues.

While it was interesting to hear Soros' views on regulation, I couldn't help but scoff when he mentioned more than once his concern for political discourse in this country considering the media outlets of disinformation he directly funds.

Epstein is amazing; I laughed out loud when he challenged Soros to rebuke the NLRB.

Thanks for the link. Interesting to hear Soros speaking about Hayek. I'll have to listen a few more  times to unpack Epstein's talk.

More Law Talk podcasts are coming ... As soon as we meet the provision in John's contract rider that calls for a bowl of M&Ms with all the red ones picked out. Also, we're considering doing a musical episode, ala " Grey's Anatomy."

Can I sing in the Ensemble?  That would be a hoot!

OK, but promise us it won't be the rap stuff they do in the Hayek/Keynes streams.

I always feel stupid when I listen to Richard Epstein.

I'm still lobbying hard for an episode segment on Harold Berman as I'm beginning to think that Mr. Epstein's knowledge of Roman jurisprudence is a tad shaky.
