Pia de Solenni provides the link to this strange but true video showing Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards ginning up the hysteria over proposed government funding cuts by insinuating that women will lose their access to basic health care services such as mammograms.

Okay.

So, Planned Parenthood access clinics must offer mammograms then, right? Well, you watch the video and tell me. And for all you ambivalent conservatives out there you'll enjoy the stats that flash up during the video on what type of budget this organization has.

If you took away McDonald's, people would just go to Burger King. If you took away Planned Parenthood, wouldn't that just mean that people would go to other clinics? Or are they arguing that Planned Parenthood is the only possible clinic for poor people?

And when Planned Parenthood talks about health services, isn't that an exercise in obfuscation, since the bulk of their health services are about family planning, i.e., abortion and contraception. How much of their gynecological services are not birth control related? I may be wrong, but I don't think they're a full-service health organization. Their services are oriented to birth control.

If we close PP, it isn't as if there will no longer be any health service for women. And of course, men don't benefit at all from PP.

Recent news has been that the Black abortion rate in New York City is very high. Since Planned Parenthood is the largest abortion provider in the country we might safely assume that PP is doing the bulk of those abortions.

Margaret Sanger, famed for her devoted belief in eugenics and founder of PP, would be proud.

I went to the Planned Parenthood website and it seems some clinics offer day long mammogram screenings, but it appears they do not offer them on a regular basis.

That is an excellent point about the founder of PP; everyone who supports PP should take a hard look at the founder, maybe they'd give it a second thought.

James Toranto of the WSJ Best of the Web column also has raised the "roe effect" of abortion.  As a conservative, if it weren't for the incredible destruction of abortion, I might actually support PP.

According to their 2008-2009 Annual Report, PP had $404 million in "Health Center Income," $363 million in "Government Grants and Contracts," and $209 million in "Private Contributions and Bequests."  So it's not as if they'd have to shut down if they lost their federal funding.  They wouldn't even need to turn away poor women, they could use some of their $209 million in donations to provide free services.

So it's more like giving $363 million to McDonald's every year, and then arguing that cutting that funding would deprive people of their access to burgers.

Maybe it's more like the McRib than burgers, around in certain locations, for a limited time but "offered" nonetheless under McDonald's products.

Perhaps I'm just ignorant of the process, but women who go to PP generally pay for the services don't they? Is it on a sliding scale? If they are covering, at least, SOME of the cost, then even if the govt. money was cut, with their donations and that regular income, the doors would still be open. They make it sound as if the government money is the only thing keeping them going.

PP:  "Here's a cream pie.  Now let me hold it up to my face...."

Naturally, I'm sure Joy Behar will be swiftly getting to the bottom of it, intrepid journalist that she is.

From their web site:

Nationwide, the cost at health centers ranges from about $350 to $950 for abortion in the first trimester. The cost is usually more for a second-trimester abortion. Costs vary depending on how long you've been pregnant and where you go.

Even if everything Cecile Richards said is true, why do they need federal dollars to offer these services?  Without even discussing the abortion angle, how many hospitals or clinics receive annual federal funding as part of their operating budget?

PP's website lists the cost of a first trimester abortion between $350 and $950 dollars.   Their Fact Sheet for 2008 says they "provided" over 324,000 abortions for that fiscal year.  Just taking their lowest figure - $350 for an abortion - that adds up to more than $113 million dollars.  And something tells me that they don't sell every abortion for a mere $350.

If it's on the internet, it must be true. Did you hear the phone calls?

Yes, but prices reflect costs as well as supply and demand. If abortions start to cost, let's say $2,000, you'd see a lot less of them I'd imagine. The government subsidy allows the abortion to be cheaper than it would ordinarily be and therefore distorts the baby killing market.

If the government subsidized Ferraris so they cost the same a Porsche, you'd see a lot more prancing horses around.

I did listen to the phone calls. There have been "some" mammogram screenings at some PP sites in the past which allows Cecile to claim this as fact. I am not surprised those answering the phone don't know about an infrequent event.
