Emerald Diamond

Politics, shmolitics--you wanna see a GREAT music video? I'm serious. This woman blows me away. Her name's Caro Emerald. She's Dutch, though she sings in english. The album's called "Deleted Scenes from the Cutting Room Floor," and is just about uniformly fantastic. I'm too elegant and debonair to make some debased, uncouth remark about how sexy she is, but I'm sure Ricochet gentlemen will think of their own.

Re: Emerald Diamond
Good idea false Thracian god (or is it the Areopagite to which your moniker refers?) We definitely need an Arts & Leisure contributor. I don't think I've used the verb "hate" in a sentence with an alcohol as the direct object ever. The right blends aren't bad. You have to exercise the old taste buds from time to time, lest they get tired of the same ol' thing.

Re: Emerald Diamond
Aeropagite. The Thracian god is a blended god. When I get tired of single malt scotch, I usually switch to Chartreuse. Part of being a world class crank and internet spectacle is marrying a religious figure with a feline avatar combined with absurdly high brow and discriminating taste in alcoholic beverages, heavy caliber weaponry and cryptic bond references, mistaken not purred.

Re: Emerald Diamond
The throwback look and feel remind me of Rick Brookheiser's review of a Natalie Merchant concert, one who adopted the same elegant appearance- "She could lose a pound or two, but you wouldn't want her to."

What amazes me about the Grace Potter cover is that it was live. Most live rock music sucks. It's pretty easy to take an attractive female singer into a studio and mask her lack of talent (think Taylor Swift), but when she goes live, you know what she's really got.
Eh, Caro can do live, too. Here she is covering Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" live in a radio studio -- which she does much, much better than the original (I checked). It's not only well-done, but... really funny. The ska beat is... identical to a polka beat... and when the band members play backup singer, I dare you to close your eyes and try not to picture a bunch of drunk German guys solemnly bellowing along to a polka.
For other guys who aren't as offended as Kenneth by the artifice of being sexy in a music-video, here's a tango of Caro's, complete with cute Dutch girls frolicking. (I'm not the one to judge whether it's a particularly good tango, though, because I just like tangos, even when they're bad.)

I am going to hate this post when I pay for all the music downloads. Andrew, love the video. Makes me want to order a Manhattan and smoke. And I see you like the fuller figured babes, huh? I'm liking you more and more.

MFR...you hit it outta the park with that one. Whenever a musician can get up in the morning to do a drive time radio show and sing that well, you know she's got chops! And that's the second day in a row Lady Gaga has been mentioned on Ricochet. Has there been an directive to appeal to a younger demographic?

This is RicMinInform territory -- ask Bill. Or perhaps Mr Walsh -- who's just a whippersnapper himself -- has a crush on Lady G and has been subverting RicMinInform directives accordingly.
Lady Gaga does command a bizarre fascination, though... Anthropologically fascinating.

Folks, went out and bought the album. Very nice. What doesn't have a swing feel is like the extended credits for a James Bond film.

Thanks, MFR. Having seen the live performance, I'm more impressed. I think my indifference to the original video comes from my dislike of pop music in general.

Indifferent to pop? Then maybe Isabel Bayrakdarian is the chantoosie for you.
Here she is in Tango Notturno (despite the Italian title, the very strange language you hear is German). She probably has been heard most often, though, as "the Evenstar" in the Lord of the Rings soundtrack, where the timbre of her voice is perhaps the best feature. (If elves really were so skilled at music, why would they have come up with so much wishy-washy new-age pop, so reminiscent of a despondent Folger's commercial? Why not chromaticism or polyphony or something?)
She is a Canadian born of Armenian parents who's sort of made a crusade of reviving Armenian classical music, a kind of music that might strike the Western ear as a bit weird. But she does it so well. Such effortless expression and control.
Oh, and she's also an opera singer. Considerably finer than the average opera singer in both voice and appearance, I think.

eMusic is the way to go.

Re: Emerald Diamond
The word is sultry, although Billy Crystral threw Momma off a train for saying it. Tempo reminds me - a bit - of Squirrel Nut Zippers - but she simmers. And shimmers. I bought her album a few seconds ago. There is a vulgar simile which ends in the phrase ... "harder than Chinese algebra" but I'm too elegant to use it. Besides, I'd never get a job at NPR, would I? Thanks Andrew!!

Re: Emerald Diamond
Here is another clip of Lady Caro live, singing "That Man". She is so cute!
The music's pretty good, too -- it makes you want to dance. It has the same bass-line as the Jeeves and Wooster theme song (though a different key). Jeeves and Wooster has one of the best theme songs, I think, for sheer catchiness and topicality.
