Emerald Diamond

Politics, shmolitics--you wanna see a GREAT music video? I'm serious. This woman blows me away. Her name's Caro Emerald. She's Dutch, though she sings in english. The album's called "Deleted Scenes from the Cutting Room Floor," and is just about uniformly fantastic. I'm too elegant and debonair to make some debased, uncouth remark about how sexy she is, but I'm sure Ricochet gentlemen will think of their own.

In the words of Borat, "Very nice."

I'd say something, but Andrea Ryan is going to let the hounds out, so I'll keep my whiskers locked.

Re: Emerald Diamond
Even I'm not really sure what I just said, but I think there's a Ricochet drinking game you can make out of trying to figure it out.

Carmen meets Ella meets... ABBA... ?..
I'm not sure exactly what Caro's song means. I don't know 'zactly what she came here for. I can guess what it usually is, though...
"L'amour est enfant de Bohême..."
(Just goes to show opera singers occasionally let it all hang out, too. Or it is almost all hanging out.)

I'm sure those zoot-suited wolves from the old Bugs Bunny cartoons would have something to say about this...

Re: Emerald Diamond
Thanks, James. Great video. And Kenneth: terrific cover. I've listened to Live Rust more than probably any other album (possible exception: Steely Dan's Aja), and this captures the essence of Neil Young, with better vocals, at least at the high end. Yeah, I know. A low bar.
One thing that has always bugged my about Cortez the Killer, though, was this stanza:
I mean, really. Weren't the Aztecs warriors, and widely known as such? Was it really necessary to whitewash them to make his point about Cortez? Maybe I'm not getting Neil's whole "the women all were beautiful / the men stood straight and strong" vibe.

NICE. The glorious Tex Avery!

Ottoman Umpire:
Yeah, it seems that old Neil kind of glossed over that whole hearts-and-livers-cut-free-with-obsidian-knives-to-appease-the-feathered-serpent thing. Or the pyramids of skulls. Or the blood drinking.
I'm sure it was an honest mistake, though.

All poetic license, but great art.
What amazes me about the Grace Potter cover is that it was live. Most live rock music sucks. It's pretty easy to take an attractive female singer into a studio and mask her lack of talent (think Taylor Swift), but when she goes live, you know what she's really got.

And the thing about Grace Potter is that she isn't trying to be sexy, like a girl in a pop video - she just is. She's so full of joy and so alive.

Nothing is as good as the original. Miss Ella and some guy from Hoboken.

Re: Emerald Diamond
Well done, Andrew. That just about makes my day. She's so perfect in all the right ways; white hot, knows her instrument, knows her groove. A classic talent.
Check out Carole Lombard:

The talented producer of this video knows she has that smoldering torch singer quality of the 1930's, and does a brilliant job with the retro graphics and Hollywood- style movie scenes. Brilliant. Never would have thought it wasn't American if you hadn't said something.

Re: Emerald Diamond
Pretty good update on the 1950s bossa nova sound. The double entendres aren't quite as subtle as they used to be. Still nothing compares with the incomparable Julie London.
Hopefully Miss Emerald can stay a little more sober than Amy Winehouse has. What a wasted talent.
Madeleine Peyroux is pretty impressive as well. But for my money the best modern day chanteuse is Neko Case - hands down.
By the way, here's another version of Caro Emerald's Back It Up.

Re: Emerald Diamond
We need some separate music threads on Ricochet. And a thread on single malt scotch. I hate blended scotch.
Re: Emerald Diamond
Awesome video and song. Thanks for sharing it, Andrew.
