This morning, I spoke to Ricochet's own James Lileks, who was waiting for his ride to the airport, and Ben Domenech. We commiserated, indulged in some gallows humor, and thought a lot about the future. Well, not so much for James, because he had a plane to catch.

Unfortunately not. We didn't record it. It's probably for the best….

Love the Sinatra at the end of the podcast. I was playing that exact song in the car this morning.

The gentlemen on the podcast seem to think the solution is to rejigger the old paradigm.  I'm here to tell you the old paradigm is dead.  Party politics are a part of the problem, not the solution.  The debt clock is about to strike midnight, and it doesn't matter that the populace is blissfully ignorant.  New conditions will soon force upon us an entirely new paradigm.

Loved the ending from Ben Domenech!

New member here but a long time Ricochet moocher (but a moocher NO MORE!!)....after last night's drubbing, I need to seek solace in a familiar place and I needed to make amends for the 134 podcast's I listened to for free over the years.....what better family to come home to than Ricochet.

Thanks!

Four years ago, the morning after the election, I decided to stop listening to, or reading, news. I stopped reading The Corner, stopped listening to talk radio, stopped reading about politics. This morning I felt the same way. I had breakfast listening to Beethoven, instead of Bill Bennett (whom I like a lot), and I somehow found some peace. I entertained the idea of terminating my subscription to Ricochet (after all, Need To Know is a free podcast), since, you know, I'll stop reading news and political commentary.

I am not sad, I am angry, furious. I am not ready to look at any analysis or discussion. I should simply concentrate on my work. But I think I'll keep my subscription. If we all felt the way I feel, and we all cancelled our Ricochet subscriptions, then they would have won (well, they did, but you know what I mean). So... I'll stick around, but I won't be a happy camper...

As to Ben Domenech's anecdotal Hispanic women who is pro life, pro limited government but voted for Obama because Romney doesn't care about Hispanics...Seriously?  First of all I'm not sure how you square being for limited government but want your politicians to "care" about you.  Secondly, is she's saying that on substance the GOP is more in line with her values but Obama gives her more warm fuzzies so she's going with the warm fuzzies?  If the GOP has to do people's thinking for them - even when these people agree with them on substance - then this is a lost cause.

My first big grin of this long day was when Rob referenced Jack Kemp.  I met Jack on two occasions and the memory of engaging him one-on-one can't help but make me smile.   One could disagree with Jack Kemp on an issue but one couldn't help but like him as a man if you were ever in his presence.

Sooo, what do you think the new paradigm is?

1.  Liberalism has corrupted our culture beyond recovery.  The consequences of immoral behavior must necessarily bleed out before people come to their senses.

2.  Politics is not and cannot be the solution when the profession is dominated by immoral men and women.

3.  The economic fallout will flatten economies worldwide.  We'll need new systems for production and exchange based on something other than paper currency before a recovery can occur.

4.  Local and small will replace large and complex.

5.  Community based relationships will become more important than a citizen's relationship to the national government.

Everything is about to change.  Everything has changed.

I disagree with Domenech's assessment of the libertarian "you're on your own" critique.  Domenech actually articulated the libertarian view - that it's a community issue to come together to support each other and solve problems and work through things.  I agree that this needs to be a stronger part of the messaging and well articulated but lets not kid ourselves - liberals/the media/etc will demagogue this as leaving people on their own, cutting "investments for the future", and the whole 9 yards. Any message that pushed moving things out of the federal arena will be sold as "Social Darwinism".  We need better messaging but that isn't a complete solution.

You might well be right.

But instead of waiting to be "saved by the apocalypse," just in case the apocalypse doesn't hit quite as fast and hard as you expect, in the meantime maybe we ought to try to figure out something useful to try to reverse the slow slide.

Remeber what they say: "Not with a bang but with a whimper."

So let's whimper a little . . . and then get on with business as if, you know, there might actually be a tomorrow that's not all that different from today, and another one after that, and another one after that, and another one after that, and another one after that, and another one after that  . . .

Good!  Glad to hear it.  That's how a minority party -- which is what we are, as of this morning -- gets bigger, makes more noise, attracts a following: we stick together.

James Lileks

I had the Horace Reaction last night as well as this morning. Life's too short to bore a hole in my gut obsessing over the grim implications of what we've just seen. Time to retire to my villa like Cicero, and spend my days gardening. Well, until Titus Pullo shows up to drive a sword through my neck, anyway.

Then Blue Yeti texted me and asked if I wanted to do a podcast. JUST WHEN I THOUGHT I WAS OUT!

And so back to it. Look, it's Pelphase. Gusphase will roll around again.

I also loved Ben's analysis at the end that points out that there is an entire generation that doesn't remember what it was like to live under the malaise of the Carter administration and are about to receive a first hand education what the Obama administration's policies actually deliver to the citizens as opposed to the hope for a brighter, fairer future that was promised.

The school bell is about to ring and class is about to start. We need to be ready to point out, in a more coherent than we have in the past, the effects of the coming collapse of the administration's policies. When this happens we need to teach these folks in a winsome manner how conservatism will actually help them when mirage of a level playing field where the successful are vilified and avarice is a considered a virtue bears its eventual fruit.

The best thing for me is now I don't really care about politics that much.  Go ahead Dems, you own things, your problems now.  Best of luck!

You are right but there are ways to access their emotions and votes. I am too tired tonight to give this a go but did post ideas on She's post about The Female of the Species.

Ben, so with you on all points made. James, you hit all my thoughts too.

For hope, as a non political woman, I stumbled on Ricochet and was fascinated. I knew rien/nada/zip about American history, politics.

i thought Reagan was a dozy actor...well, all the MSM stuff but I have been through the Ricochet re-education boot camp. I can tell you guys, Ricochet can teach and change views. Even women's views.

Thank you for taking the time to chat intensely.
