Last week, Troy Senik dubbed the appointment of Donald Trump to the role of moderator in the upcoming GOP debate "astonishingly foolish."

But what makes Trump's participation in the debate downright inappropriate: reports that he's still considering jumping into the race as a third party candidate.

But as much as “The Donald” relishes his role as Republican kingmaker, he won’t close the door on his own independent presidential bid once the next season of his reality TV show, “The Celebrity Apprentice,” wraps up on NBC next spring — a prospect that could spell doom for the eventual GOP nominee.

“I absolutely have another bite,” Mr. Trump said in an interview. “If the economy continues to be bad and if the Republicans choose the wrong person, I would do it.”

In related news, Newt Gingrich will be pilgrimaging to New York today, seeking to be anointed by The Donald.

I'd rather Trump moderate than someone from NBC CBS CNN or even the insipid Mike Wallace. At least Trump doesn't pretend to be objective. As for a third-party run, he's not doing it. People, even very smart people, are making the mistake believing there is such a thing as a "journalist" in our modern media.

If Trump and Gingrich get to sparring, the net result could be Trump reduced to a quaking bowl of Jell-o with hair, not leaving him well-positioned for a third-party run. On the other hand, Gingrich seems to be actively trying to make friends with Trump, so it's not clear to me who Trump will pick a fight with, if anyone. But it's hard to imagine he'll be a paragon of impartiality, given his abortive efforts to get into the race, and the lingering possibility that he'll try again.

What's the difference between Donald Trump and Brian Williams? They are both biased, they both work for NBC and they both host reality shows. I'm glad everyone is finally catching on.

Just when you thought this primary race couldn't get any odder.  I have to admit that I'm stunned that the Stup...the GOP would do something like this.

Look, I'll admit that I have sort of a soft spot for The Donald. Anyone who makes Rosie O'Donnell that nuts can't be all that bad. I also think he should have been the one tapped to rebuild the World Trade Center. Sure, we would have had to call it the World Trump Center, but it would be done by now.

However...using a reality TV star to moderate an allegedly serious political debate is insane especially when that TV star is talking running against your potential general election candidate.

There are much better people to moderate one of these debates. Let's start with Dr. Rahe. Good luck topping that.

Even today, Trump remains publicly doubtful about President Obama's birth certificate.

I can think of few issues that would torpedo a Republican candidate's chances among moderate voters as quickly as being associated with birtherism.  All the candidates should drop out immediately, if only to avoid being tarnished by the stench of an unrepentant birther.

If not, I'll be holding my own nose and voting for Huntsman.

I would add that Trump is personally familiar with the consequences of both debilitating debt and scintillating net worth, unlike the MSM toadies. I am always interested in what he has to say, but particularly so in today's current economic climate.

Say what you will about the Donald; he is a survivor.

I was wrong, there is one notable difference. One shares Obama's general world-view, the other doesn't.

The other difference, and my main concern here, is that Trump openly admits that he's still considering a run in 2012! Why don't we invite Barack Obama to moderate the next debate?

That would be very interesting to have Obama moderate the debate. At least we'd know that his questions were wholly motivated by partisan politics and there would be no pretense of impartiality.

We also know Trump is a self-aggrandizing boob, only he isn't as good as Chris Wallace at pretending he is not. I just don't see how any bias Trump has, any unfairness he meets out, won't be as obvious as the mainstream media reporters pushing their agenda.

In most horror movies, the undead zombies gnawing on your leg are survivors as well, but I wouldn't want them on traffic duty, never mind moderating a presidential debate.

The National Forest Service may declare Trump's hair a protected area to allow a tree planting and reforestation program time to obscure his view of the candidates at the podium.

Yowser, there is certainly more discussion of the keratinized, pigmented filaments growing from the epidermis on this site (see Romney's "perfect hair") than I've ever heard in any salon!
