Milwaukee County Board Supervisor Peggy West, a Democrat, says she might understand if a state like Texas, which shares a border with Mexico, wanted to pass an immigration reform law. Arizona, on the other hand?

Democrats are apparently prohibited from actually reading the Arizona bill, but you'd think they'd be allowed to pull out a map.

This is almost too painful to watch.

Still, I watched it three times.

Me too! There's just something about watching people (especially partisan politicians) say embarassing things that fills me with glee. That probably makes me a bad person...

Sadly, this Milwaukee woman isn't the tenth of it. That one party county board is a menace that keeps that area moribund. Hopefully the clip goes viral.

Three thoughts:

1. I thought Republicans were members of the stupid party--this sort of undercuts that.

2. What does this say about American education? We're so absorbed in making all the little kids feel good about themselves that we don't bother to teach them where Arizona is.

3. No, you're not a bad person watch a bureaucrat make a fool of herself. They certainly don't feel bad when they make a private citizen grovel to get a routine permit or their car licensed.

Opps.

From the Milwaukee board website

http://www.milwaukee.gov/West

"Supervisor West grew up in Milwaukee and graduated with a degree in Human Services from the Milwaukee Area Technical College. Prior to her election to the Board, Supervisor West worked for 10 years in the human service field."

"Active in her community, Supervisor West was named the 2004 Hispanic Woman of the Year by UMOS, Inc."

"A committed believer in community service, Supervisor West volunteers for UMOS, Inc. and Mexican Fiesta and serves as a mentor at Notre Dame Middle School."

You would think the "Hispanic Woman of the Year would know the borders of Mexico!

It would be different if she had been raised in the Great Lakes region or something, but she's from Milwaukee, right there in the beautiful American Southwest. Amazing.

:) Nicely put.

For the longest time, I kept forgetting Ohio is a different time zone from Texas because I always just thought of it as being "up there". Frankly, as nice as it would be if every American could easily fill out a map, most people don't travel back and forth across the country like so many Ricochet contributors. Geography isn't that relevant to their lives. I'm willing to cut her some slack.

Though I have to wonder why the Milwaukee County Board is discussing the Arizona border in the first place. Perhaps they were considering building a fence of their own to keep the Swedes out?

What I really want to know is, what does the map of the US look like inside this woman's head? Where does she think Arizona is?

And also: now that she knows Arizona borders Mexico, she's okay with their law, right?

Naw. She gave a long rambling explanation on a Milwaukee radio program about how she REALLY meant Arizona only has the 2nd longest border with Mexico so she doesn't see why they have a problem.

In her defense, she does understand that the weight of military personnel and their dependents will not send Guam plunging to the seafloor.

In Hank Johnson's defense, he never claimed the island of Guam would plunge to the seafloor, only that it would capsize, presumably dumping the civilian residents into the ocean before righting itself.
