Paul Rahe earlier today lamented the fate of Lazar Greenfield, suggesting that the moral of the story was "don't cross the feminist harpies." I feel compelled to offer in return this story about a bunch of young, good-looking Ukrainian feminists who were surprised to discover that the whole world started taking feminism seriously when they started stripping.

Femen is operating in the aftermath of a feminist backlash – because gender equality is seen as a socialist preoccupation and too closely linked with the ideals of the Socialist era. As Shevchenko says: "We didn't want to be traditional feminists . . . Women's organisations and groups here only write papers and nothing more. We need activists who will scream and leave their clothes in the street."

Paul, I'm not sure what the moral here is, precisely, but I'm sure there is one, and welcome to Ricochet, everyone who just Googled "naked Ukrainian women."

In my limited experience, the folks who delight in taking off their clothes in public places are rarely those one would want to see in such a state.

Philadelphia has a naked bicycle ride each year.  Takes a whole lot of eye bleach to banish the images.

I clicked on "show more" and was quite disappointed.  The link was even blue!

Kenneth, I decided Ricochet was no place to reproduce photos of half-naked, young, good-looking Ukrainian women, but from the photos I've seen, I'd guess there's no such thing as a man who'd find it that awful to have them running around topless.

So, Claire, how would a naked protest go over in Istanbul? I would hope their faces would remain veiled though...

The woman in the photo at the link looks like a tattooed Carrie Underwood with a pouty mouth and an attitude ... maybe young American girls could learn a thing or two from their Ukrainian sisters?!?!?

Perhaps you might want to avoid being exposed large nude political protests that occur in Mexico City.  Kinda glad I did not have the camera handy that day...

Oddly, the Police presence for the event would surpass an Obama visit..Hmmm..

Not sure "what the moral" is here?

Perhaps it's an immoral.

Having lived in Ukraine for a year, I can say that sex tourism is a very real issue there (present company excluded, of course). As the article said, there are few, if any, visa requirements, it's close to Europe... and just as importantly, close to Turkey, the Middle East, and Northern Africa.  I occasionally read a Turkish blogger who talks about how companies from Turkey go on "team building" trips to Ukraine, to, you know, boost their morale. Istanbul is just an hour from Odessa and maybe 90 minutes from Kiev, so it's quite convenient. Russia has a tight visa policy, so it happens less there.

It's also been known that foreign guys walking in Kiev have been accosted by these gals because it is automatically assumed that they are looking for prostitutes. They may actually not be wrong that often.

In solidarity with these Ukrainian women, I move that the United States should immediately establish a no fly zone in Ukraine. Without delay, we have a responsibility to protect here and I volunteer to aid in this historic effort.

Moreover, I think we should be honest and recognize that mission creep may occur under these dire circumstances and that troops on the ground may be necessary.

On a somewhat separate note: we've had the Orange Revolution and the Arab Spring.....I offer a, ahem, PG-13 challenge to my fellow Ricochet contributors to find a fitting appellation for this "revolution".

Paul A. Rahe

My opinion is that the American College of Surgeons should hold its next convention in the Ukraine.
