Do You Have To Be Liberal To Be Cool?
"The World" seems to think so.
"We hear a lot in the media about anti-Americanism," says Lloyd Price, Badoo's Director of Marketing. "But we sometimes forget how many people across the world consider Americans seriously cool."
An unscientific poll by Badoo.com found that, despite President Bush's meticulous efforts to make sure "the world" hated us, we Americans are still considered the coolest cats on this big round blue party wagon. Here we are atop the standings, along with the first nine runners up trying to ride our wake.
10 coolest nationalities
1. Americans
2. Brazilians
3. Spanish
4. Italians
5. French
6. British
7. Dutch
8. Mexicans
9. Argentinians
10. Russians
Nothing surprising in the rest of the VIP list, except maybe the Russians (although this video provides a strong case in their favor).
So whom shall we thank for making America so flippin' awesome?
Of course, not all Americans are cool — far from it. Some like Snoop Dogg, Lady Gaga, Samuel L. Jackson, Johnny Depp and Quentin Tarantino are way cooler than others. ...
"America," says Price, "boasts the world's coolest leader, Obama; the coolest rappers, Jay-Z and Snoop Dogg; and the coolest man in technology, Steve Jobs of Apple, the man who even made geeks cool."
Did you notice something about the bolded names above? As far as I know they are all either blatant leftists or implicit liberals. So whose bias is that, the poll authors' or "the world's"? And who are the world's coolest conservatives unjustly omitted?
(Aside: I'm sure Claire will be dismayed to read that her beloved Turks are thought to be the third most orthogonal squares in the world, even squarer than Canadians.)

I don't think Obama is cool anymore- he's more of a complete joke nowadays.
The coolest conservatives are Chuck Norris and Mike Ditka. Just my 2 cents.

Poles are on the list of least cool? Some list. The country merely has more attractive women than just about any other country I've seen. That definitely counts for something.

Well one should always investigate these things. Badoo is a "social networking" site if you use the therm very loosely, and on top of that ranks only 117th in the world with respect to such sites. (At least according to the source of all knowledge). So MSNBC is using them as a source to define cool? The mind boggles at how far down they have to go to get the results they want..

We all wanna be cool when we're kids. And that's fine. Being cool is "cool," after all. But one day, sooner or later, we're supposed to grow up.
A quick glance at the "cool" individuals on the Badoo list reveals only one grownup: Steve Jobs, the "geek." The rest are just aging adolescents.
It's never cool to be the grownup. But somebody's gotta do it.

I was using the poll more as a launchpad for the post, rather than a source of true information. What is "coolness" and does it have any effect on our politics? It sure seemed to in 2008.

Excellent point. Compare the most famous celebrities of previous decades (John Wayne, etc.) with those today (pick any hip hop artist or NFL player). The most prominent features of the modern superstar are ostentatious displays of wealth and disregard for moral inhibitions. And these are admired and celebrated.

Coolness by itself is worthless. Take the money and fame away from most of these people and they would be dorks/geeks/nerds. They're cool because they're rich & famous, not rich & famous because they're cool.

I am sad that Canadians got such a bad rap. There is no shortage of very talented Canadian musicians and hilarious Canadian comedians. I wonder if "the world" thinks they are American since many of them succeed in Hollywood?

As far as the Canadians go, I find it rather curious. Up until a couple of years ago, the Libs seemed to be very fond of pointing north and telling us how much better Canada was than the US. Not so much of late. I wonder if it's because their gov't seems to have had its head screwed on a little straighter fiscally...
