Here's a quiz--in English!--to help you locate your position on the Turkish political map.

Go on, take it: I won't tell you what the surprise is. You'll see.

Can't get the results of the survey on my iPad because it doesn't have Flash, unfortunately. Said I'd see a "less dynamic version" but that never appeared. Will try later on a PC.

Would especially like to see the survey results for respondents who checked "illiterate" for their education level. Assume that term has a more nuanced meaning in Turkish?

Is the Evet Party the squish party of Turkey for the politically illiterate? I put "neutral" on just about everything as many of the questions were relative (e.g. "Should the gov't do more of X?") because I don't know how much they do now....

I don’t see a surprise. I seem to line up with Milliyetci Hareket Partisi. Are they a scary party?

Interestingly, I found myself answering questions differently imagining myself living in Turkey than if I had been answering for here in the US.

I don't know.  I either completely agreed of completely disagreed with most of the questions, and I still got put in Evet.

Darn.  For my one year Ricochet subscription anniversary today (woohoo!!)  I decided to snazzy up my name a bit, but now my photo has mysteriously vanished from all my old posts.  And it's such a glamorous snapshot, too.

Um … isn’t “Evet” supposed to mean something like, “Yes, you are here”? It isn’t a Party, is it?

If I understood correctly, "Evet" is not a party, it refers to position on the political spectrum - sort of a "you are here" sign.

Answering relative questions without knowledge of the baseline is a bit of a guessing game. I too must have come across as squishy. The only thing I felt strongly about was that Turkey should not go out of its way to be come a part of the failing EU enterprise.

Not sure what the "surprise" is. The only thing that caught my attention was the somewhat center-right but balanced position of AKP.

Hard to say! They reversed all of their political positions as of this morning. But generally, they're ultra-nationalists.

Büyük Birlik Partisi, but they are a bunch of pathetic squishes.  I denounce them! I denounce them all!  What this country needs is a Büyük Birlik Partisi that responds to the will of the people!  And more Dairy Queens.

Well, yes, that was the surprise to me--and frankly what I expected to be the surprise to everyone on Ricochet: turns out I'm a solid supporter of the AKP.

Congratulations. You're a Turkish ultra-nationalist Islamist. And the first person in history, I think, to denounce them as squishes.

I ended up midway between Saadet Patisi & Milliyetci Hareket.  Not being Turkish, I have no idea what that means.

No, no, it means exactly the same thing. Odd, that does seem a methodological flaw.

Is Evet the main opposition in turkey?

Oh, my God--what kind of people am I hanging out with here on Ricochet? Saadet is wacko Islamist!

It means "Yes." The biggest opposition party is the CHP, which I'm guessing no one here will like because they're just too pink (according to their platform).

Well, i did agree that women should be allowed to wear headscarves in the workplace; maybe that makes me a wacko Islamist.

On the other hand, would wacko islamists even allow women in the workplace in the first place?

I'm laughing, because this exactly is the source of so much cultural confusion. "We're not Islamists! We just want exactly the same freedom to wear what we want that you Americans take for granted!" And it is such a compelling argument--and indeed one I completely buy in principle--until you live here long enough to notice that the people who most want the headscarf ban removed are excessively well-represented on Gaza-bound flotillas.

Which party do you belong to, Claire? AKP? ;)
