From Military.com, it seems this was a SEAL operation, carried out with the deadly accuracy and efficiency one might expect.  My favorite part of the story:

U.S. helicopters ferried elite counter-terrorism troops into the compound identified by the CIA as bin Laden's hideout -- and back out again in less than 40 minutes. Bin Laden was shot in the head, officials said, after he and his bodyguard resisted the assault.  Three adult males were also killed in the raid, including one of bin Laden's sons, whom officials did not name. One of bin Laden's sons, Hamza, is a senior member of al-Qaida. U.S. officials also said one woman was killed when she was used as a shield by a male combatant, and two other women were injured.

In their final moments, these men hid behind the people they subjugate, abuse, denigrate, and use as objects to lure maniacs into suicide attacks.  How quintessentially repugnant.  A burial at sea, hmm?  This guy was grotesque enough to make a shark barf.

I also noticed the "one woman was killed when she was used as a shield" bit, which says pretty much all we need to know about jihadists. Every recent event in the Middle East lends to my growing belief that precisely targeted "rubble makes no trouble" raids like this are the way to go.

Give Pakistan - sorry, Pah-kee-stahn, as the president says - less cash, cheer them on when they take it to the jihadists, and whack the occasional terrorist inside their borders. Unless we're still wringing our hands about the irrevocable sovereign rights of terror-sponsoring states, which I doubt is much concern for the Left given the guy in office.

As ever, thank God for the SEALs!

It's a good thing that Obama  was prevented from following  through on closing  Gitmo and  on permitting our intelligence techniques to be revealed in public civilian trials of  captured terrorists.

The sober analysis is that  Obama has been saved from himself by  wiser  people.    It is they who deserve the hat tip today.

And of course the SEALs who took all the real risk.

Why no pictures of the body?  Why burial at sea?

This will bring the cospiracy theorists out of the woodwork.  "Bin Laden is not dead but is being kept at Gitmo."  "Bin Laden died of kidney failure and was not really taken out by the US." etc.

Where is the transparancy?  We have not heard the last of this yet.

Standfast, check out Google images. It's graphic, though.

When I herd this news I thought this must be a special force soldiers biggest fantasy. I am sure the guy who actually shot him will for the rest of his life never have to pay for a drink. That is if they make it public who the SEALs were. They might keep it under the radar for a while so as the terrorist don't try to attack the soldiers families. I

wonder how all the sailors on the ship celebrated when they dumped his body into the sea. Unless they just threw the body out of a helicopter on the way back. I would be really interested to know who gave the order to dump the body into the sea and who signed off on it before hand.

I have a prediction.  We will hear less and less about this story over the next days/weeks until it completely disappears as it becomes clearer that all the things Obama (and the left) have railed against (Gitmo, interrogation techniques, etc) are shown to have been pivotal in this action.  This story will only be useful to the MSM as long as it makes Obama look good.

Nothing on the helicopter that went down due to mechanical problems?

There's only one image and it is not in high resolution.

Yeah...ok.

Why not just send a cruise missile or other highly accurate weapon? Were we trying to capture someone? The target looked fairly large and the walls would have contained some of the blast I would think. Do we not execute others with predator strikes?

I realize I have no intel and I am just speculating but it seems this operation was designed to do more than just demonstrate some justice.

In the movie I would like a uav painted to look like a United 737 and have it fly into the compound.

1) I don't doubt the story! I'm not looking for a conspiracy under every rock, but...

2) Dave, the photos on Google were posted (re-posted) on several blogs, and in following some of them there seems to be some doubt about the validity of the pics...may have been "photoshopped".

3) I'm glad he's gone and don't doubt the event story, but I'm waiting for the final "official" version and any "official" photos first.

4) I'm also looking forward to the conspiracy theories that will show up...should be high drama and/or comedy for some time to come!

Maybe those Zionist sharks the Egyptians discovered would like a nibble.

Anyone have any idea how Muslims feel about burial at sea?

I heard a story a while back about Muslim terrorists in the Philippines. It seems that one of the leaders of the Philippines at the time had some of the terrorists shot after capture. Before they were shot, he supposedly made a bit of a production of having the bullets they were to be shot with soaked in pigs blood. According to the story, this effectively ended the terrorist attacks at the time. Not sure how much of the story is true, but it kind of makes sense.

I, too, am wondering why the burial at sea. I would think we would want to retain some proof that we did, in fact kill him. Propaganda can be a powerful tool, you know.

I do hope there were some intelligence folks in that assault team to grab any papers, computers or other material lying around. It seems obvious that this fellow had powerful friends in Pakistan, and let's hope they are sweating today.

And as for proof that we did really kill him, I don't see that we need to offer any proof and to whom would we offer it? People will believe whatever they want to believe, proof or not. The people who we really want to impress with this action are the people in regular contact with Osama, and they don't need photos; they know he's gone and that we can get them too.

He'll also have to retire now, because the clanking of those great brass attachments in his shorts will forever give away his position when he moves.

At least he gets to retire on a high note.

It may have been riskier to do it up close and personal like that, but I guarantee you those SEALs took great satisfaction in getting to do the work themselves.
